Is there a trick to get the ball off of the top to pull the joystick out?

I haven't tried really hard yet, but I was thinking it through before I started disassembling it and thought I may as well ask first.

oh yeah I should have mentioned that. The stick won't come out.

something I noticed when I pull on the luigi stick(while still with the ring on) it pulls up a 1/2" or so. seems pretty standard.

the mario stick does not pull up that 1/2"
guess the stick is stuck or something.

and I did remove the c clip and it would not come out. sorry, should have mentioned that the first time.

That's usually what happens when they are super dried out and gunked up.
The bushing could be seized on the shaft. Try putting some liquid wrench on it where the eclip was and let it absorb in between the bushings and shaft. Any penetrating oil should do the trick. Try to spin it back and forth until it comes loose. The stick on my DK jr was just as bad and now it's as smooth as silk and it still has the same parts in it.

Also, it would probably be a good idea to remove the switches first if you haven't already. You don't want to get that penetrating oil in the switches.
