I am so discombobulated when it comes to keeping track of my tools. I have no idea why I am so good at spreading them all over my 1300 sq ft house. How do you keep track of your tools?

Tool box. I bought a rollaway over 20 years ago and it's served me well. I still end up with tools everywhere, but I eventually put them away. - Barry

Home Depot sells these sweet Husky doctor bag-type tool bags that work great for small/medium sized tools. Outside pockets, inside pockets, and a 'tool wall' with more pockets in the center. Spot on the zipper for a small lock. Even has enough room to jam a Dewalt drill + battery + charger in there and you can still zip it up with some effort.

I keep one for electrical tools and one for mechanical tools, and also have some of their larger bags.

Mine has been on numerous overseas trips and the zipper hasn't even broken yet. It has outlasted I think 3 suitcases at this point.

Other than that for keeping EVERYthing organized I like Knaack's line of hinged slant-top tool boxes, but they're about $1K a pop. Awesome quality and craftsmanship though, plus a recessed lock system for security. Their carts and cabinets are also pretty damn nice, but for those you're looking at around $1200-2K depending on what you're getting.

tool story bro

I have a small tackle box for all my electrical tools and a medium sized tool box for everything else. Like everyone else my tools end up everywhere.

I have a peg board in my work area that holds most of the tools I use regularly. Every tool has a spot and that's where it goes. :D

I also have a combination of various drawer units under and around my work bench for the rest of my stuff.

This system has worked the best of any I've used over the years.

(When I go on the road with my tools, I use a system that is a step down from spiffy's... cardboard box. ;) )

LOL old school, eh? :)

I don't think that my company's customers would be too amused if their tech showed up with a cardboard box full of tools though. Nor would the box likely hold a set of pipe wrenches very well. Though I suppose I could always keep a roll of duct tape in the box. :D

I have multiple tool bags, boxes and places designated for tools. The problem is the damn things don't put themselves away.

I have a roll-away and two separate boxes... My main problem is organization. I have a ton of stuff for working on cars/motorcycles and the only real way I have stuff separated is by metric and standard.

I really need to sort it out. A separate dedicated box just for working on games could be pretty small. I usually find that I normally just need a few wrenches and screw drivers to do stuff on them.

I use a 5 gallon bucket for my tools. :) Yup, I have tools and I haven't even killed myself with them yet!! :p

I split my tools up between different work areas so the fine detail board-work set is away from the wood working which is away from the automotive stuff. That way I've got everything I need per task in one area and on the rare instance when there's project crossover, it's easy enough to grab an individual tool from the other area.

Hmm...

Google image search... 'bucket of marital aids'.... no... nothing there that's funny and wouldn't get me banned, I'm not touching this one. :(

I'm not married.

That being said, I have a hammer, a couple screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers that I keep in the bucket. I have a cordless drill and a circular saw, 2 hand saws, and a Skil saw... impressive, huh?? Oh, and a putty knife too...

That being said, if I ever decide to plug in any of the power tools, please call 911 immediately and ask for them to send help...

I do well with the pile system. When I finish with a tool I lay it on the ground. When there are enough tools in the pile to where I can't find anything or I've finished the project then back in the toolbox they go. Problem is when it takes weeks to finish the project.
