I've been practicing soldering lately, and I think I'm getting pretty good at it.

One thing I want to know is how do you hold your parts to the board?

On stuff like LEDs caps and resistors, I've just bent the leads a bit, so they hold themselves in.

But, what about on chips and stuff that doesen't have long leads?

Hold the chip on with your fingers of the hand holding the pcb.. with free hand get a bit of solder on the tip of the iron and touch a couple of the legs to anchor it on the back.. You can flip the board over and not worry about it falling out then. start soldering the other legs and go over the first couple you did to hold it in place.
There should also be enough to fold over the tips of chips with your fingernail and hold it that way.. everything will penetrate the pcb fully and be out the other side. If you are socketing there are sockets with bent legs that snap in and hold themselves.

That sounds difficult. If it is new parts, just bend the leads out so that the leads lock the part to the board. If it is a chip, then you should be using a socket and friction will hold sockets in.

Use a fine-point chisel tip and solder one or more pins from the component side. Then flip over and finish. For parts where you can't get to the leads from the top side, yeah you have to hold with one hand and tack solder with the other.

This is what I do too.

Bubble gum :) .

Heh, j/k... I just bend the leads out slightly, or tack down a pin or two w/ solder... depends on the component.
