How do you guys keep track of high scores at your housecade?

I use plastic numbers and dymo tape on a felt board mounted on a game-specific wooden plaque.

Here's my new scoreboard. Picked up the board for $10 on eBay and another seller had the letters, numbers and storage box for $12.

Bottom half courtesy of my son ;)

My step-son just broke his high score on space ace last night and we wrote it on scrape paper we had laying around. Next to the other tidbits of papers that have my high scores for spy hunter and black widow, among others. Not very organized I know. I see a dry-erase board in the garage arcades future ;)

annual bump. I need to settle on a scoreboard solution. Really like the feltboard, dry erase and cardstock solutions.

michael(zud) had some nos rc cola signs and i shouldve picked one up.

I should keep track of high scores but i dont. FOr me and my friends its more about having a good time. If someone does very well on something, its bragging rights and well known, hi score not really needed.

SO this thread got me to thinking...which can be dangerous at times. I also needed a way to keep up with and display high scores....and being that Im a real geeky kind of guy this is what I came up with:

Sorry about the crappy audio, Im using my phone to make the recording.

I created this using nothing but open source and/or free software. Im running the client on the same PC that runs my home automation since it is always on anyway.

The digital signage software is called Xibo that I run off of one of the web servers I have running here (its actually a virtual box machine running on the same pc as the client). The client runs on either windows or linux and displays on a VGA screen or TV. All updates to the client are automatic...when you change the design, it gets pushed out to the client.

I used paint .net to create the background on the first sign and the graphics for the high score regions, and I used FreeStudio to convert the videos into SWF flash files. I also use KDenlive for video editing/creation, but I dont have anything in the sign from it yet.

The high scores on the left pane consists of 33 regions that pull transparent png images from a web server to fill in the game name, the score, and the name/initials of the current top score holder. To change any of them I simply drop a new image on the server and it gets pulled and updated automatically.

The flash videos playing on the upper right can be anything I want them to be I just chose a couple from youtube and threw them in there for filler. Each region has a timeline for how long to display each piece of content so I can play a video, then show a picture for 10 seconds, then play another video...or put another image up, or....whatever really.

The high scores text on the bottom right will be replaced with a graphic weather depiction since I did something different with the scores and then the ticker at the bottom that is currently displaying the weather from our weather station here at the house will eventually display current info such as new xbox/wii/play station games I've gotten, the latest DLC i've added to the consoles, someone's personal best high score, etc etc since I am moving the weather to the other region..

My home automation system pulls the data from the weather station software and an RSS feed is created by a vb script I wrote to create the RSS xml file that feeds the bottom ticker in real time.

Of course...all of this can be changed on a whim, or I can have several "signs" running on a schedule...just whatever.

I added a second sign in the schedule (also created using paint. net) just so you can see it change...it's supposed to be bright yellow but it washed out in the video, it looks pretty good here.

I went with a Coke theme since the screen will be mounted above my Coke machine.

Soooo...thats how I display my high scores as of today :) Hope you like it (and sorry for the wall of text here heheh)

I was going to post this as a new thread, but since there already are a few of them, I'll post it here.

This isn't the most colorful solution, but it works well for what I wanted to do.

A few months ago I purchased the Nu-Dell message board with letters, 24"x36", black from ReStockIt.com (https://www.restockit.com/Message-Board-WLetters-24x36-Black-(NUD52436).html?prd=1) for $72 (free shipping) (FYI, looks like the price just went up to $74). It came with 288 letters each in 1", 3/4" and 1/2" sizes. I used the 1" letters at the top and 3/4" letters & numbers for the rest of it. There is space for 35 game titles on this board using the 3/4" letters.

Obviously, what's included doesn't have nearly enough letters and numbers to populate the entire board (after Galaga, Dig Dug and Frogger, you are out of Gs!). I ran out about a quarter of the way through and ended up buying a 6-pack of the Nu-Dell White Letter & Number - 3/4" (http://www.instawares.com/white-letter-and-number-34.50150.0.7.htm) from Instawares.com for $55 (free shipping). Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous for little pieces of plastic. Anyway, each set has 144 letters and numbers (and it comes with 6 sets). You can use the letter O in place of zero since they give you more of the letters. UPDATE: I've since had to buy *another* package of just numbers because I ran out of several numbers after opening all 6 of the letter/number packages I bought before.

I bought the letter organizer container at Michael's craft store for about $8 (it's a craft/bead organizer with 32 bins). The photo shows multiple sets of 3/4" letters & numbers in there.

By the way, I don't own all of these dedicated games. Most are in multiple-game systems (Ultimate Arcade 2 and a 60-in-1 game).

This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. Thanks a lot!

I've got an old black label whiskey bar advertisement chalkboard that hangs in the game room that the kids and I use.

I have one of these hanging above every game that doesn't have a HS kit installed...

(this is the best pic I can find right now... note the small blue dry erase board hanging between the Armor Attack & Star Castle)...

I also have one between Gorf and Wizard of Wor...

For those of you that have letterboards, Sams Club has letters at a pretty good price IMO. Sadly they only have white, but I figure I can use some spray paint to change the color (my letterboard is white).

Gothic (324 pieces) -
1/2" - $8.18
3/4" - $8.27
1" - $9.84

Helvetica 1" (288 pieces) - $9.84

If you buy today, it's a free weekend, so you don't need to pay the 10% non-member charge. I ordered a three sets of the 3/4" Gothic, ended up being $32 with tax and shipping.

Does anyone know where the NuDell board can be found to purchase?

No matter what I turn up, it appears to be out of stock everywhere.... frustrating to say the least...

Thanks.

Got something in the works Tom but won't have time to wrap it up until this winter. Don't bother asking because I won't tell. :)

I know this thread is kind of old, but I got my idea for my high score display here and figured I would share it. Plus it would be cool to see other similar displays that people haven't posted yet. Thanks for the idea!
