Did they have some heavy duty stencils that they used over and over or just paper one time use ones? I have been searching and haven't been able to find out.

The films I've seen of Atari production shows them silkscreening the side of the games directly

Atari stuff wasn't stenciled.

Metal, reusable stencils - for a production line, stenciling 1000s of games. I believe the same is true, in general, for any pinball machine.

I guess an exception would be prototypes, small runs, etc..

Williams also had a thin clear coat they put on after the colors where all down..I think this is why some of the cabs survived and look a bit better over time than others I've seen.

all of them used brass stencils and silkscreening in combination at times.

Taito for instance silked everything, williams sprayed, midway did both.

I always thought it was somebody with magic markers doing all of the side art. . WOW was I wrong . . . .

Early Gottlieb pins used metal stencils and did not press up directly against cab but just placed near it. At least thats what I deduce seeing as how from cab to cab there are noticeable differences in overspray and overlap. But no smears.
