My house is only 5 years old, and when built I had the choice to either have the house insulated from the basement, or the basement insulated from outside. I chose the former so it gets cold. I just didn't want that foam insulation on my concrete walls. Some day I may finish the basement, but for now I will live with the cold.

I only have 3 air vents in the basement, so it's usually pretty cold down there. It was about 16 C (60 F) yesterday when I went down. I'm currently renovating and have one wall torn apart to re-do some of the insulation, among other things. Yesterday was the perfect day for that - in the places where it needed better insulation, there was actually frost formed on the vapor barrier inside the house.

I plan to put down Dri-Core and carpeting, and maybe a gas fireplace this summer, so that next winter it should be cozy warm down there.

My basement was about 78 degrees or so (hint: heat rises and there are no below ground basements in Houston) :D

Not sure of the exact temp, but I can handle being out in the garage barefoot for about 5 minutes, then it hurts. I figure that is too cold to turn on the games. I have a propane heater to use out there, but I don't currently have anywhere to set it up. It is kinda sad really.

About 76°F, but I'm pretty sure none of you in "Winter States" want to hear about it...

And, it's inside, so...

With the (-20) degrees Fahrenheit it was yesterday morning outside my basement was a balmy 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Needless to say I wasn't in my basement much yesterday. And I have a bunch of stuff I need to get ready for sale too! My basement is unheated except for one air vent in the duct work that is there just to keep it from getting below freezing. Winter is a pretty miserable time for me.

That's what you get for living in the woods. :) It was a balmy -13 here in the "city". And my car wouldn't start.

I haven't been out in the arcade at all this year. I have a portable heater that you plug in but it doesn't really heat the place up that well.

Whoa, are you visiting from the year 1892? Fireplaces are generally natural gas nowadays. No soot, fake logs, push a switch to turn them on, built in fans to circulate the heat.

Ha!

My basement has 3 vents for the whole thing and I keep two of them closed. The Family room and my office are typically about 60 degrees. In the family room, I also have a wood burning stove and when I have that cranked up it is usually around 80 degrees.

No soot or anything... worse case scenario, I have had the fire go out before it is hot enough to draw up and it has gotten very smokey... thankfully it has been a while.

My attached garage is about 10-15F over the outside temp here in cold-winter/hot-summer Sacramento. So, that makes the games a bit cold to play when it's in the 30s outside.

At 40cents a kWh (my marginal electricity rate since I blow through the first steps), it's not cost effective to heat the garage with electric heat (I tried). The 4 games add to the heat as do a few shots of your favourite spirit. In the summer it can be really too hot to play if we don't get the delta breezes.

Still, I have nothing to complain about compared to guys in colder parts of the country.

And, by the way, didn't we all play arcade games on location while wearing a jacket??? Puffy jacket as I recall too.

My basement is probably the warmest place in the house in the winter. The furnace is down there, and though I have all the vents closed, there's still a lot of heat down there (turning all the games on warms it up a lot as well).

I keep my house thermostat at 67, which is what the main floor stays at... the basement is probably another few degrees warmer, and the upstairs is a few degrees colder (my bedroom is right above the garage and has tall ceilings and gets down to ~55 many mornings). It's currently 58 in here.
