how bad is it to bypass the isolation transformer on a monitor? i just picked up a machine and the isoaltion transformer was not there at all... yet, the monitor still works. am i missing something

Most newer monitors don't need isolation transformers. I have seen a monitor that required one, run without one. The ground prong was broke of the wall plug. (I guess on purpose). When I fixed the plug the monitor fried. The isolation transformer was bad so someone bypassed it.

You identify the chassis first. Then - if you can't figure out if it needs one - you ask us here...

right on. i will post info on chassis tomorrow. probably post a pic with it, too.. thanks guys...

Here are pictures. Does it need one?

thanks. now to trouble shoot why it is not working in my cab but worked 100% when i picked it up.

If it WAS working before you moved it (without an isolation transformer), then you were lucky.

If you tried to re-power it back up in another cabinet also without an isolation transformer, then it likely blew:
1) fuse
2) bridge rectifier diodes
3) one of more HV traces

That's usually it

If you're keeping it in the original cab you got it with, and it *was* working, and now isn't, you do notice the video plug is unplugged, correct?

Chances are theres an iso in there somewhere.
