Do you have them on the defaults? Easier? Harder? Why?

Got to thinking about this recently. Most of my games are set to the factory defaults, because I like them to play like they do in an arcade, and that's how most seem to be set up.

There are a couple exceptions. Galaga is set on the hardest setting, because I figure practicing on that will help me on the medium-difficulty machines in the wild. Tempest is set up (supposedly) so I can start at later levels…*Once I crack 300k.

I'd say that most of the games I've picked up were on easier than normal settings when I got them, so that seems like a pretty common thing to do.

Before I have guests over I have certain games that would be to difficult for non or unseasoned gamers set to easy. My reasoning for this is that if the game is to difficult less repeat players will come back to playing it and may avoid it completely on their next visit to my gameroom. My other games I have set to normal giving enough challenge that the player keeps wanting to come back for more telling themselves "one more time I bet I can do it".

i set most all of my games to factory default.

but some of the just normally hard games i set to easy. ie.. popeye karnov and G&G ect...

and some of the hot tourney games i set to the twin galaxies tourney settings just so that any body can try for a world record at any time.

Peace

Factory. However, I will be turning off blood and violence on my MKII for an upcoming party. Since, I have gotten into this hobby I have wondered if operators ever set their games to harder.

I set my games to the easy setting. My kids and their friends play them more than I do, and most are set to free-play (if possible) anyway. I give them max lives too.

Once the kids get to the point of setting the high scores, I may raise the difficulty back to factory. Until then, let them think they are really good at the games.

Everything I have is default settings. Well besides the 60-in-1 That's all set to easy/max lives etc. Since it was intended for my parents to enjoy.

When my niece is around thou she loves the Mame cab, since she changes games every 5 minutes or so. I tend to set whatever game she plays (I really need to make a favorites list for her) to the easiest possible settings.

I always set mine to the Twin Galaxies settings. I feel like I am cheating if I do it any other way. :)

Interesting responses. I don't like to pull the games out and monkey with the settings all the time, so I prefer to set them to factory and leave them that way. Definitely see the appeal of setting a 60-in-1 / MAME to easier settings, though.

It's interesting what a difference it makes. I thought I had Tempest back to defaults, but hadn't changed the aux board switch back to 20k per extra life from 10k. But just that setting was the difference between hitting 260k with ease and struggling to break 200k.

Oh, and on the subject of TG DIP settings, does anyone else think their site is just awful? I hate that you need an account to see DIPs, the whole site is impossible to navigate, and I just get annoyed as hell with it.

Absolutely - their site is wretched to navigate....though I did find my way through it and set most of my games to their settings (except when it comes to free-play).

By default was blood turned on? I ask as a lot of games seem to have it turned off by default. I know my die hard has a violence setting that by default is off.

To answer the orignal question I normally leave the settings alone or with very little tweaking. I turn on violence or blood mode, set the games to 25 cents a play, and enable any type of continue options if they are disabled. For shooting games I disable auto reload. Generally I don't mess with the difficulty setting or speed one. I do turn on the advertise stuff if it is off as well.

I usually do the factory recommended settings with # of lives usually at five. I always liked it when I got 5 men BITD.

+1

I usually use default, but for bragging rights I recently decided to use TG settings. Really got pushed that way because I couldn't find defaults for
Mario Bros and Popeye.

Bragging rights for me is wishful thinking anyway, I suck but have fun playing. :D

I mostly play with my 5 year old so I tone down the difficulty so he doesn't get frustrated QUITE as fast. Better for when friends come over who aren't as experienced with the games as well. More fun, less frustration.

Nearly all my games are set to the "Default settings" for difficulty, if I change something it's generally to set Free play and sound off in demo mode. If it has a free play mode I set it for my convenience and for my guests and I turn the sound off in demo mode so I can light up the whole arcade at night without waking my babies up.

Some other exceptions to the defaults are:

Street Fighter II: CE - I have it set to the hardest difficulty because it was getting too easy for me.

S.T.U.N. Runner - I have it set to the EASIEST setting AND there's an option to allow an "Advance After 1 continue" on it that I have set because it's the hands down favorite of my son (who's 5) and my 2nd cousins who are around that age. They can generally clear a board (or 2) and if they fail they have to try it again, but if they fail twice it moves them to a new board. They seem to have more fun (and get less frustrated) with it that way.

X-Men - Since I can't add a "Free Play" mode, every quarter gives the max number of lives (I think 9).

Though not a dip switch setting, My Ms Pacman has the speed chip installed, because I prefer it that way.

Easiest period I only play for fun. I'm not good enough on any game for wr. So why get pissed after a long work day

I only have two games set on default. Smash tv and SSGT. The rest are on easy. MKII on default is hard. computer cheats. On hardest, it's even worse. I don't think I can even beat the first character. I know I suck at it. but I still lover the game. T2, I max out on the amount of time I can play ever the power level goes down and I start out with 100 rockets. Out Run is also set on easy. Most of it is for the kids. For awhile I tried to set everything the same as what's out in the wild. I remember when Chinatown arcade had SSGT. I had the hardest setting with about 50% wheel feedback. I managed to get 3rd place.
