How are you going to compensate not being able to attend CAX?

Hi guys,
another year...another year I can't attend CAX. Even though San Jose is reasonably close (7 hour drive or a 1 hour plane ride) I've never been. It's always either work or family...doesn't help my oldest son's birthday is July 18th :(

for those that are unable to attend, how are you gonna spend the days leading up to it and the weekend? Play some games? Work on projects? Host a game night? Buy some games?
Curse our luck it's in northern California?

Me, well If I can sneak some time in, I plan on playing some Gorf, reading old game posts and waiting to hear back from friends how great CAX is/was and how I should have been there, lol. I've already started compensating buying a few games I've got absolutely no room for. (Stuffmonger and Vectorinvader, I may be hitting you guys up soon to help
me out ;)

let's hear how you're gonna spend the weekend :)

Wife is flying to San Diego and I am getting really drunk.

:)

I can't attend this year because, like last, it falls on a weekend that comes before my "deadline Monday". Essentially I can do "stuff" every other weekend as those Mondays aren't too terribly important in my job... however opposite weekends but up against deadline Mondays...which I have to be at work for... or I turn in to a pumpkin.

Taking my wife and baby down to LA for her cousin's bridal shower. Meh. I'm going to be hanging out with her fiance. Going to visit some friends and my brother's family while were down there too.

Any good arcades down in the Monterey Park and Artesia areas?

I'm new to the "hobby" but would have loved to go, wife is not working right now so money is on the tight side....

Will just have to look at the pic's and read the post's to vicariously live the experience. :(

Us Socal members should charter a party bus up there for one of these someday. ;)

Sh1t...if you guys are gonna be down in socal, mebbe I can convince the wife to havegeometry people over Saturday night to okay some vids and keep me company in my CAX-induced misery :D

I'm only about 40 minutes away from Monterrey park.

It might be a stretch though...our sons birthday party is Sunday and we may have stuff to prepare, but Its not totally out o the question, lol. I'll test the waters and and report back... That is if my head doesn't get chewed off ;P

Keep fixing what I have with the intent of selling and hoping that I stumble across something by next year that would be worth brining.

Why can't you just do all that work the weekend before? *scratches head*

Keep me in the loop re: your arcade parties. My schedule is usually jammed, but I'm in Tustin, and I'll make it a point to get to at least a few.

(I'd invite you all over, too, but I feel obligated to get player 3 + 4 working on my Warlords first.) :D

Doesn't work that way. My deadline is a deadline for the public to place their ads. I can't just change the deadline else I'd have quite a few pissed off potential customers... essentially anyone who calls to place their ads after I deadlined early.

Ah. The work has not all come in yet. They have internet at the hotel at CAX. :)

I will be spending the weekend on the boat with family. It's pretty much what I do every weekend in the spring & summer. Arcades are something I fool with in the winter when I can't go to the lake and business is slow. BTW what is CAX and what does it stand for? LOL. I assume it's cool for arcade collectors to attend?

Holy cow, my wife...the SiniSara just green lighted me to host Saturday night if anyone is interested. It didn't come without paying a steep price, however... I'm gonna have to put away my iPhone all day Sunday, ack!! I'll post a socal party thread in a few..

Damn Tom! I was really hoping to catch up with you at the show. Love that 3 player Rampart action.

Regarding the original question in the post here: My advice to those who can't go is to start planning on attending next year's show. Make it known to family you'll be going...write it in on calendars (I know its not announced, but you could probably guess)...request time off work...start to budget/save...etc. That way the family/work/real-life over-scheduling will be limited.

I'll have a new baby at this time next year, and have already gotten the okay from the wife to attend.

Yeah, that's where I misplayed it this year. I had told her I was going months ago but never put it in our calendar. She had asked me if we could make it to her cousin's shower about a month ago and it just slipped my mind when I said "Sure!" Come a couple weeks before CAX and I double-check our calendar and notice her dates on there but not mine. Discussion was over right now. Family comes first and I don't want her driving (or flying) down by herself with the baby. I'm stamped in for next year though, but as most of you know, anything can change that.

I guess I would say I compensated by attending the Seattle show this year for the first time.

I'll check out CAX one of these days... it is a long drive, but easily can easily be managed.

@Endofline: lol, bro. When you put it that way... I guess I have bought my son a few games this month for "his" birthday.. at least that's my story if the Missus finds out ;P Then again they don't call me 2kTom around these parts for nothing! :D

My job is in the arcade field so I'm cool with not going this year. Its great fun and I will miss some of my friends though.

I'll be working...

Matt

I'll be painting cabinets during the day and working on boards at night. These guys need to be finished.
