I have a cabinet that I can see has a picture, and has sounds, but the picture is compressed to about 1/16th of an inch. Would a cap kit fix this problem? What should I try?

Sounds like vertical deflection failure. Cap kits not bringing that back. What type monitor is it....K4900? GO7?

But yeah, recap it if it hasnt been done recently. Im sure it needs to be freshened up while you repair it.

Hehe. I like the fan added to keep the chassis cool. Well, for starters, check for cold solder joints at the yoke connector. I've fixed many, many curbside TV sets with vertical collapse by simply resoldering the yoke connector.
