hooked up lights wrong...game freaked out!!!

kind of weird...a guy i know has a multigame cocktail and he wanted coin mechs installed...i put them in for him and when i did i noticed the lights above the player controls weren't hooked up...i mistakenly hooked them up to the +5 on the power supply instead of the +12...when i turned the game on, it made lots of noise thru the speakers and the screen was all green and funky looking...i wouldn't have guessed that it'd make any difference in the game itself, just in the lights, but i was wrong...any comments on why this would happen? go easy on the "way to go dummy" comments too...ha ha...thanks
 
You sure you didn't unhook (accidently bump) something else? What you did isn't going to cause what you're now seeing. It's not like you hooked +12 to +5 ;)
Check your voltages on the power supply, start reversing your steps (hooking up coin mechs or what ever).

It sounds like you may have accidentally connected the +5 to ground? Or, if you were hooking up the ORIGINAL wiring, and connected it also to a switching power supply, you may have mixed AC voltage with DC voltage. Did you unhook it and is it okay?
 
it was only temporary...i saw right away that i hooked it to +5 instead of +12 and when i reconnected it, everything worked great

The +5V is the 'main supply' to your board. Depending on the game, a drop in the +5V (caused by an extra load) will cause some of the board to 'act funky'......

yeah, I think a drop in +5 is like there being no load on the PSU at all, which can in turn cook a switching PSU if left in that state for too long.

but that's only if it's like that for 15+ seconds. I'll bet you crapped your pants when you saw that. lol
 
ha ha..pretty close!!! the noise thru the speakers was a bit of a jolt too...i guess that makes sense that the 12volt ligthing circuit was pulling down the 5volt supply to the board...
