Hey guys, I bought a Hook last week and I'm disappointed in the DMD. Check out the below pictures. There's some minor issues during gameplay that I can fix but am not sure about the DMD. It's not un-playable but the DMD gets so garbled up sometimes that I can't tell what shot I'm supposed to hit.

Suggestions to fix it? Would I need to get a new display like the one that just popped up on eBay here:

Sometimes this is the cause:

When replacing the resistor, it is best to just cut the old R95 resistor out, closest to the resistor itself. Then solder the new resistor to the old "legs". It is very easy to tear the traces when removing the old R95 lead. This technique will prevent that. The resistor is a 33K, 1/2 watt. A Radio Shack # 271-1129 is an exact replacement resistor:

Replace the resistor first, then see how the display looks. You may end up saving yourself a lot of money.

Takes two seconds to check r95, but usually if that's gone its all garbled. That looks like your classic out gassing display. Either go with NOS glass, and solder all the pins in, or buy a LED one. Their a pain to deal with, being so few games have them. Todd

Thanks for the reply guys.

I just pulled the DMD out and see nothing loose or anything burnt. How would I know the R95 is bad?

I've never worked on a hook.. But if its got a HV pcb, then I'd rebuild it. Kinda like doing a cap kit on a monitor, as it will freshen up your DMD.. Also, I've had luck pulling DMDs and fixing broken segments by drilling into the glass and reflowing solder.. But that's a last resort fix, as I've also broken a few..

Check and replace the ribbon cable to the DMD, reflow header pins.. Replace connectors.. Good luck
