Holy crap...

Then you have diesel fumes building up over time in an enclosed space with HOT electronic circuitry, that's always fun! Could the diesel that soaked into the wood of the cab possibly ignite if it got too hot? Then there's that sweet diesel smell that'll never go away. It'll be a total adrenaline rush every time you play!

Fortunately, it's a Sega Turbo, and not a Sega Star Trek.

Back in the late eighties, I worked at a dealership, and I once accidentally broke open a bottle of BG Diesel Max fuel conditioner on the parts counter. The counter top was Formica, and I swear that diesel smell never entirely went away.

Whilst you are out getting a bag of kitty litter, grab a bag of charcoal and dump that in there too. Charcoal will absorb the odor of the diesel. I would imagine the cab will need a couple of treatments.

On another note, I once spilled diesel on my jacket while working on a furnace. I tried everything to get the smell out, but nothing worked. I was going to throw away the jacket, but my friends mother recommended this cleaner called odo ban. It's freaking amazing. I treated it with that and gave it a good wash and it was like new--no smell what so ever. It's possible to get rid of that smell, but it's going to be a bitch in the process--GOOD LUCK!

Ok I just dumped a bunch of kitty litter in it, I'll let it sit and change it a few times over the next week. There's also some Fabreeze-type of stuff I once used in my car that worked great, I'll have to try that afterwards.

Odor-X from Turtle Wax is supposed to be amazing. I have a bottle to use in a truck I bought but haven't tried it yet. Might have more potency than Febreeze. They make gallon bottles and a small spray bottle.

Although I have had really good luck with the original (unscented) extra strength Febreeze.

I think what I might do is use Minwax Wood Hardener over everything after I think I've cleaned it up as much as possible, and then paint over that, hopefully that'll minimize the smell.

Heat Gun

A heat gun will help evaporate the fuel. Why didn't you pour the fuel in the tank from the outside fill point? Just the other day I had to add 6 gallons to my tank to make it until the next delivery and I used the outside fill point.

I have a walk out basement and for some stupid reason they piped it out the back, which comes out about 10 feet off the ground, and above a snow bank right now which makes using a ladder a pain.

Heat gun? You've got to be kidding... It's the fumes that are the problem with flashing over... and you'll have an orange hot heating element... EEEK!

Diesel fuel is oily and gets into everything.

To get the kitty litter to work you may have to crush it and rub it onto the wood the same way you crush the litter under your shoe and rub it onto concrete to pull oil stains.

Once you clean it the best you can use Killz to cover it. That paint is supposed to cover over oily stains. If you don't like the white then paint it black after the Killz dries.

Well, I didn't say do it inside the house. But a heat gun works wonders for evaporating oil based products soaked into wood.

Vertical tank? I didn't know such things existed! I have a 275 gallon horizontal version. Do you think they make a vector tank? :p

It's just taller than it is wide, I'm not sure if my basement's ceiling is high enough but I plan to check into it.

I think vector version came out about the same time Polybius did.

Polybius! LOL! That totally reminded me of the Original TMNT episode "Leonardo Versus Tempestra"

i don't know that it'd help, but i'd try wetting the inside of the cab down with simple green. IIRC, its an enzyme cleaner and might very well eat the diesel, so to speak.
After doing a little reading, it seems it might lift it from the wood. Might be worth a try.

I think quick action and the use of the kitty litter has worked, everything seems pretty dry inside and the smell is minimal, I may be able to salvage things yet. It worked pretty good drying up the floor too, it used to reek of diesel and now that smell is gone, I highly recommend keeping a bag of that stuff around for such emergencies.

Ugh that's the last time I EVER fill the tank that way with anything anywhere near it!
