I'm (hopefully) picking up a Tron today that works but sometimes you have to hit it on the side of the cabinet to see the screen. Or so the seller tells me. I've only seen a poor photo but it looks like it's in decent shape. Aside from checking the connectors etc. what else should I take a look at right off the bat?
I'm really, really excited about this one. $100 well spent and just in time for Christmas!

Please don't let this deal fall through...

I wouldn't check anything else on it at the seller's place. Hand the money over, say thank you, and bring it home. Then order a cap kit for the monitor from Bob Roberts.

And also remember other KLOVers from Kull-i-fohnia are reading this as I type- do yourself a favor: Go get the machine right now.

Cold solder joints are as common in arcade monitors as they are in televisions. Ever had a TV you had to whack to get the picture to straighten up? Same thing. Really easy fix. First thing's first though - get the game! Hand over the cash, load it up and drive away. Then worry about fixing it.

It's probably just a 4600 with cold solder joints on the cards.

So the cabinet's safe at home. Pics attached. I won't go in to detail here until I have a chance to play with it, but it has no sound and the graphics glitches are evidenced in the pics. I'll play around with it in a few days. Not bad for $100 though. And a 1.5 mile drive from home to boot! Now if I can only get the guy 4 doors down to part with the DK Jr I saw in his garage I'm in business.
The controls are surprisingly very, very smooth. YES!

Having to hit the side of the game... Thats probably a Wells K4900 with cold solder.

Graphics issues... I'd start by replacing the ribbion cables if they have not been changed.

Nice score for $100.00!!

Awesome pickup!

Also, try reseating the ROMs on the game boards to see if that clears up the graphics issues.

Amazing. Yes, it's a K4906. I don't want to go off the monitor topic too much but I got the sound working by cleaning the connector contacts.

Serial number 5546.

There are solid wire jumpers that run along the back side of the chassis that get cold solder all the time. Eventually they will burn a small hole in the board so get to them before it gets worse.

So I will do this in the next couple of weeks after I finish up my current project.
I couldn't resist pushing and pulling a few more connectors and lo and behold - everything works flawlessly. Well not flawlessly because I now have intermittent sound. So I now know that after I go through everything and actually clean up the wiring, reseat everything and clean up contact I should be working 100%. I cleaned around the bezel and screen with a little damp cloth and this is in really nice shape. Just a little burn in from the MCP cone.

Thanks for the ideas on reflowing the solder and checking the ribbon cables. I'm really, really happy about this one. My best find yet IMO.

Great find. My only advice next time you find a deal like that get it before you post about it I would hate to see it sold to the highest bidder if you know what I mean. I had a seller once tell me if I fix the game its an extra 100 bucks if I fix it.

I understand where you're coming from and can only say:
First, I always hear about verbal agreements on CL being about as solid as a steaming pile of poo, but I've not once in at least the past 6 years had a verbal deal on the phone not go through, both buying and selling. Sure, it's only been about 20 transactions, but still, I'm hitting 100%.
Second, I suppose someone from this board could have gone out of their way to hose me but considering I can't even get my closest fiends to visit because "it's so far away" I guess I'm just not that concerned. Besides, I'm fighting the good fight in that there are literally thousands of machines turning up all over the place and anyone from this board sniping a machine from another member isn't someone I care to associate with anyway so WTF. It's not like my life would be incomplete without the machine. If I see that happen I'll publicly MAME a classic in their name. Heh.
