Back in the day I was always more concerned with getting farther in the game than how high my score was. I always felt like I had won if I got to a higher level than whoever I was playing with, even if they beat my score. I liked getting to see new levels and the variety of gameplay that came along with it. Point pressing for big scores never appealed to me. It was just an added bonus if I got to put my initials up on the highscore table. I guess I am still that way today. Anyone else? High Score or Higher Level?

Depends on the game. With early games like Asteroids, Centipede and Missile Command it is all about the high score since the game doesn't really change all that much level to level.

With platformers, beat em ups, and any game that showed some sort of progression bar or map it is all about how far I could get.

I always felt the same way. I always wanted to see how much more difficult the game could get when I was younger.

One game that comes to mind for me is Mr. Do! -- for a while, I just wanted to see how far I could get so that I could see what treats popped up in the middle of the board. Once I hit the point where every level has martinis, it was more about optimizing points. Although, there still is some score benefit to getting far on games like that -- all the treats are eventually worth 8000, which really racks up your score quickly.

I'm gonna say high score. In the end, they both go hand in hand anyway... Tastes great! Less filling! Some games may give you a chance to risk your life and get more points level to level, but you're still being 'pushed' to complete levels anyway. Guess I would need examples... nevermind, let me guess 720! Most of the games I played didn't have a magical mushroom new 'adventure' level to strive for... which leads to the next point...

Yep, just more of the same attrition... BZ (BZ doesn't really have 'levels', huh...), Galaxian, Scramble... But I do like to see that '10' level flag on Galax or Scramble:cool:

I always played for the level and still do. Centipede was a game that I played a lot and I was never worried about score, it was the level. It may not seem that way now when you are reflecting back on these games, but back then when the games were still fresh that's what it was all about. The play was faster, the colors changed, new enemies or how they acted was different. The farther I got, the longer my quarter lasted.
