I only have the two right side score displays working. I swapped them left to right and it stays the same so it is not the displays.

With the door closed it will just read failure on the upper right; with the coin door open; it will read "setting"

I can coin a game and it will play but I have only the right side displays and the bumpers are not functioning.

I am sure I have a few things going on here but a starting point would be good.

The failure thing with the setting is that you have dead batteries on the motherboard. As for the displays, let's first go easy on troubleshooting, did you try swapping the data cables on the displays?

I swapped the data cables and the scores just swap sides so i know it is not the displays.

I installed 3 new AA batteries on the motherboard and there was no change.

It will read "failure" on the upper right display whe I turn it on.

If I open the coin door it will read "setting"

If I turn it off and back on quickly; It will start and play. without bumpers and half of the score of course.

Make sure the batteries face the right way, post a pic if you can. I asked about the display cables to make sure that the cables were good. I will get back to you on the next test.

With the game on in game play do you have power on the coil? If not, thats the place to start. If you have power you need to find where the control(the switch under the bumper under the playfeild) is beng lost.

Confirm that the bumpers are making a good electrical switch with the game off and using the continuity checker of your meter. Trace those wires back and make sure that the good switch is seen all the way to the input of the board. If you have schematics you can follow where the board turns that signal into a selenoid drive for the bumpers.
Good luck

"Adjust Failure", as noted above, indicates problems with your backup battery pack.
So....if you have new batteries, correctly oriented - and you still get this message? It means the 4.5v from the batteries is not making it to the proper place on the circuit board.

Hopefully not a hard fix since you can still get the machine to boot......but it probably indicates your battery pack is corroded and not allowing the voltage to pass. Worse case scenario is the old batteries leaked - see any evidence of this around the battery pack?

You are going to need to pull the cpu out of the machine, remove the existing battery holder, check all of your traces underneath for continuity - and then either install a remote battery holder or replace the existing holder if you want.

Requires soldering/desoldering skill, proper tools and about 30 minutes and a $5 part. I don't know your skillset though - sound possible?

You *will* want to fix this. Otherwise, you will never be able to set the machine to free play, your high scores won't be saved, none of your software adjustments will be saved, etc. Every single time you turn the machine on you will be starting over from scratch.

I guess it's 50/50 if you fix this first or deal with the displays. Good luck.

Take some sand paper and clean off the battery contacts and you'll be good to go until you get a new battery holder. (seriously get a new one)

The bumpers not working - you need to ensure the fuse/s that drive those are in fact good (physically test them with a DMM). Also, ensure the fuse contacts aren't weak/broken.

Have you lifted the PF and looked at the wiring to ensure you don't have a broken lead?

As far as your displays go you might as well just order a display driver rebuild kit from Ed @ Great Plains Electronics. Clearly not a cable or display problem.
