"High Score" The Documentary

the well-known documentary about pinball is Tilt: the Battle to Save Pinball. i haven't seen it yet but have heard good things.

and of course, any list of arcade-related movies would be incomplete without Joysticks!

Anyone seen "video game invasion"? i haven't seen it yet and wondered if it was worth the time.

Desc:

"Explore the history of videogames from the arcade to the X-Box in this documentary hosted by world skateboarding champion Tony Hawk. In addition to exploring the secrets behind such classic games as Donkey Kong and Doom, interviews with such game designers as Atari's Nolan Bushnell and Activision's David Crane ensure that there's something for everyone from the classic gamer to the console junkie."

I have Video Game Invasion. It's pretty good, especially if you like Tony Hawk. I grew up wanting to skate like that dude. Still can't...

The best Bushnell interview is from "Once Upon Atari".

what is the length of once upon atari? i see a few 4-5 minute clips on youtube. looks cool, but just want so see if it's a long enough film to be worth dropping the $30 on.

High Score was incredibly boring and I thought the guy came off as a way-too-proud of himself Dbag myself. With lots of these movies nostalgia plays a huge factor in making us WANT to like it.

In other news...

I have a copy of Tilt: The Battle to Save Pinball for $25 shipped if anyone wants it. PM me :)

i agree, he has some buddies here who tirelessly defend him but i think the doc itself is boring and self indulgent, an exercise in futility. the prancing around in roller skates at the end is just the icing on the cake. its the most boring and tedious doc on the subject of classic gaming that i have ever seen.

Hahaha!

And I even forgot about that part.

Jeeeeeez

I just saw high score and had to revive this thread.....The movie itself was ok, and well worth the itune rental.

The best part of the movie was the final scene with the roller skates...I thought it was hilarious.... it really completed the whole arcade game documentary with another 80's nerdy pastime......arcade games and rollerskating, what a combo....

If you haven't seen the movie, watch it for the last scene....its worth it....

I liked the movie because you got to see what kind of time and practice it takes to get a record that requires a huge amount of time.

And therein lies the ugly underbelly, too.
Grown men spending gobs of time perfecting their
method for beating a computer program in order
to obtain cult fame.

I spend my night playing Berzerk so I can become one of the best. I do it because I love the game, its fun to me, I love it when I play a great game and best my high score.

Everyone is in this hobby for various reasons. The guy has a girlfriend that supports his passion and he doesn't seem to be neglecting his life, if it makes him happy, good for him.

Granted I do understand the statement about the fame, but for me, its truly done for the love of the game.

I thought this doc was great... The excitement of bringing in the newly purchased cab, the frustration of working on it and trying for the record, and the inspiration of not giving up.

Maybe because I could relate to all of that, unlike Chasing Ghosts which just seemed to reinforce the stereotype that gamers are misfit losers.

I wanna see it so bad

I wanna see this so bad but i cant and iv'e tried everything, Im in the u.k Hulu doesn't stream video to the u.k which is silly, I cannot buy it anywhere, I have written to the makers and the documentary channel who appear to have holding rights for it.

if anyone has a recorded from tv copy or otherwise that they would kindly make me a copy of i would pay you and be very grateful, It looks like a great doc and i wish to see it.

Thanks in advance
