Is this documentary any good? Has anyone seen it?

It's on DirecTV only once so if you want to see it...

Upcoming Show Time

Next On: Fri, Jun 10, 2:00AM EDT 267 DOC

Yes, i thought it was good. I bought the DVD online, just google it.

I thought it was great. I've watched it 3 or 4 times now.

Does anyone know if Bill reached his Missile Command goal?? I sure hope he got the better of that machine!

It's been on the Documentary channel a few times.

I think the guy is actually registered here as SK8GOD but I don't think he's here much.

I don't think he ever set the record on the game. From what I've read, he figured out that the resetting problem was a software issue and so he intentionally limited the number of extra bases he had in reserve to prevent it from happening again. As I recall, in his last attempt at breaking it, he miscounted the number he had in reserve and went to the bathroom and he lost his last bases and the game ended.

Overall, I thought the documentary was okay but I could see how people not involved in this hobby would think he was pretty weird. The skate dancing at the end was ridiculous.

Did you notice that he paid something like $1200 in cash for the game when he bought it? Jeez.

Not to be a downer but I'm with Robotron Jon, High Score is just okay if you ask me. I mean, kudos to the film makers for creating an arcade movie but compared to the others out there, I found High Score a little less interesting.

Not knocking Bill and his mad Missile Command skillz and boy has he got patience and perserverence, but the film basically chronicles him trying to beat the high score and that's about all it does.
I wasn't wild about Chasing Ghosts but it was a more enjoyable watch in my opinion.

If it's free on Hulu go for it, it's not a waste of time, but there are better.

Another story on arcade high scores. Y A W N!
There's far more story out there to be had about the arcade genre... I hope we see more creative story ideas some day.

Chasing Ghosts was the best traditional 'doc" for arcade games so far.

not yet. he recently figured out how to get around the reset, so rumor has it he is planning another attempt soon...

I am sure this has been asked but what other Arcade movies are out there? I know of High Score, King of Kong, and Chasing Ghosts, any others?

You can't be free if you watch it on Hulu. I ended up buying it via iTunes after watching it on Hulu so I don't have to worry about commercials or Hulu removing it at some point.

Although not directly arcade related, I really enjoyed the "Once Upon Atari" series that was done several years back. The focus is mostly about the 2600 and what not, but still interesting to hear the stories from former Atari employees.

I watched one of street fighter... Not a big SF fan tho so I found it kinda boring. They talked about tournaments in hotel conference rooms with playstations and stuff.

Loved Game Over! I'm a big chess fan. I have the DVD at home. Admittedly I don't recall the arcade portion, can you remind me?

And yes I would definitely second the Tetris documentary and Once Upon Atari.

ha you're right, I suppose it isnt arcade related. You could say it is sort of video game related as Deep Blue is essentially a chess video game... Still, great documentary!

+1 for Once Upon Atari. I bought my vhs copy back in 2000 CGE from Howard Warshaw. The stories are hilarious and really do bring you back to how the programmers were the creatives and ruled the roost before marketing took over.

There's a pinball-related documentary called "Special When Lit". It's kind of like Chasing Ghosts in that it focuses on some of the more eccentric characters in the competitive pinball scene, but has some historical perspective too.

I watched both High Score and Special when Lit and thought both were great but not if you're not into the hobby...
