Don't know if anyone posted this yet or not, but tonight on the Documentary Channel ( channel #267 on DirecTV) at 9PM Central time, there is documentary called High Score on about guys trying to break some video arcade games records. Looked like it might be worth a watch and I figured I'd let everyone else here know.

If it's the one about the guy trying to break the Missile Command record yeah I've seen it, great little documentary, in fact now that you've mentioned it I may watch it again. I think it's on Youtube and Hulu also.

It's on Hulu, and seems to be on at 7 over here in Washington.

Bill Carlton. I know a few guys on here know him, and I've met him at least three times. He's semi local

It's only about one guy trying to break the missile command records.

The guy is on KLOV - sk8god

He never posts though.

I think he paid over a grand for the machine - watch at the beginning when he lays out the cash on the pool table for it. What a difference five years makes....

You can buy it on line as well I play this, kok, and chasing ghosts in my game room from time to time. Non arcade guys kill themselfs at some of the stuff the guys in these doc's say. " I wanted the glory, I wanted the fame, i wanted the pretty girls to come up and say" "hi, I see your good at centipede" Frick that line kills them everytime!!

Damn, what a bummer he couldn't find a board that would hold up.

I don't think it was the board. I believe there is a software glitch that has since been discovered. The game will reset when you get a certain number of extra cities. Because of the way extra cities are awarded, it is hard to keep track of when you have too many.

Kinda like Burgertime. He will need to kill off some every so often to keep going.

I watched this a couple of times on Hulu and recently purchased it on iTunes. It's shorter than King of Kong, but still very enjoyable IMHO. I know in a previous thread about this that some didn't like how Bill came across in the movie. I didn't see anything wrong myself and like someone said in this thread, his enthusiasm is contagious. Last I heard here was he had attempted the break the Missile Command record again but it didn't work out.

@Robotron John: I didn't notice that's how much money he was counting out onto that pool table! That's pretty crazy! The documentary was done around 2005, but even then I can't believe a MC would be worth that much. Of course in the documentary I think Bill or the guys from Galaxy Games talked about how Galaxy purchased the machine.

that's why Bill now uses assistants to keep track of extra cities when attempting a record. he's tried several times since but so far been unsuccessful, AFAIK.

Yeah, he pointed it out during a panel he hosted at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. He said he didn't know about it during the original taping.

He also says his full time job interferes. He said if he didn't have to work, this would be done already.

I'm rooting for him.

Has anyone else made any attempts? On Twin Galaxies, he is the only person in the top 10 who didn't do it in the early 80s

Yea I'm rooting for him too. He seemed very likeable to me in the documentary. I wish I was half as good at any video game as he is at MC. I've got oodle of respect for people that can do these marathon runs. Not sure I coulde handle it physically and psychologically, even if I had the skills to play that long.

Damn work always getting in the way of games! :D In all seriousness I don't doubt that's the case. I think it's like 2 days straight or so to break the record so you'd have to have time to recover as well. Wonder if he'll try again this Memorial Day or something? I remember reading his last attempt was botched by timing a bathroom break. In the documentary they show him just sitting there losing cities on purpose, but you must not have a lot of time regardless.

yeah, there are other games that do this as well. i found out that super mario brothers resets your extra men to 0 if you go over 99. i seem to remember from the robotron run that someone did toward the end of last year that they were keeping track of lives in that, so not sure if that does it or not.

I once played Venture on Colecovision for like 4 hours and racked up like 7 million and that was starting to become a serious strain, I can't imagine playing any kind of game for over 60 hours!
