High priced console games, do you ever sell them?

As a long time rule, I have never sold anything out of my collection, barring trades to local game stores to upgrade condition. I just learned one game in my collection is worth near four figures, and it is very hard for me to not want to list my first ever ebay auction.

I know I would take a hit on Paypal fees and that I would never find this title again. It would also split up my system collection.

Anyone have any experience with this type of situation?

If, someone offered me $1000 for my Omega Race UR, I would turn it down. I don't know if this is the money talking in this particular situation, or something else.

Please discuss.

I have yet to sell any of the "high dollar" titles in my collection. I collect to collect, not to sell. I assume that one day, if I need to, I would see some of it.

Out of curiosity, what is the title you speak of that is so valuable and you'd never find again?

I don't have any console games that are worth more than $100, but if I did I would be tempted to sell. I do have 3x copies of FFVII (long story) that I'm holding on to for some strange reason, even though they are worth a lot more than I actually paid. That being said, I'd probably sell your game in question if it was worth that much, assuming it didn't have any sentimental value to you.

I wouldn't treat games as an investment, if that's what you're asking. If you want the game in your collection, keep it. Personally I would take the money and run :)

I have no clue if any of my console games are worth anything... I'm assuming the answer is no. That said, I tend to hold onto everything and then sell all my games with the console whenever I decide to get rid of it.

I had to sell 2 N64 titles this year for extra cash. I didn't want to but I let them go. I sold Bomberman 2nd Attack for $90 (had I gone eBay I would have gotten more), and UFO Super Bowling for like $130 something. I know they're not anywhere near 4 figures, I purchased these games for $8 each 3 years ago.

It is a very unusual situation, as far as owning a game that is worth in the four figures (barely). The releases in this high price range can be named by the hardcore collectors in the group: Magical Chase, Nintendo World Championship, Stadium Events, Chase the Chuckwagon, etc...It is a very limited group of games that were only released in the US market.

Most of the rare console games are similar in value to arcade PCBs. Rare ones that are in demand are a couple hundred dollars, and values fluctuate. Very few make it into the thousand dollar category. Again, Quantum, I-Robot, Bouncer, Turbo Sub, Reactor, Q*Bert's Qubes, etc.

The copy of FFVII for the Playstation 1, black label variant, used to bring several hundred dollars. Now, due to the re-releases, the value has...softened...as they say.

Usually, I don't care. I originally learned that this title (which I prefer to be vague) was selling for $500. I thought about it for a day or so and reasoned that, it was cool that something I own might have brought that in a fluke auction. I am feeling like the further it climbs, well, I can't own it. I am calling this...Antiques Roadshow syndrome :)

I know there are some hardcore current or past console collectors here might help me reason this a bit better.

The most I got for an NES game was around $100 for a CIB Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! with Letter from Mike. The box was in fair condition so I was happy to get that amount.

I think I got around $150 for a Mega Man 9 press kit that I got for $50 at a convention.

I agree that unless you have the ultra rare games that are worth hundreds/thousands, I wouldn't look at console games as an investment unless you have boxes of stuff to sell in bulk or sealed graded games which some guys do.

I'm not into collecting and all of my high dollar games are gone, I don't care about the blockbuster comp cart, or my panzer dragoon saga. Sold em as I didn't play them and looking back I still don't care about those games....I'm just saying...

I sold a SNES Super PO for $225 on ebay.
I've gotten good prices for stuff like Web of Fire Spiderman 32X both of them for $125-150.
I sold loads games north of $100. I think I sold my Snatcher also. I have a few more that may or may not sell very well.

8 years ago when I was getting married, I sold a sealed in the master carton Steel Battalion unit for $500+ with a guide and poster I got while working at Capcom. It was cool cause I got an employee discount for the game in the first place. LOL.

BITD I think I got $120+ for a PSOne copy of SF2 Collection... the better one.

The only console game I sold for big bucks was the import pc engine version of Dracula X.

I'd have to think video game prices are close to a peak right now, I'd sell it

Gah, I need to know what it is! :p

I agree. If you really want everyone to help you completely, you should reveal the title. Why wouldn't you? It will only help you in doing so...unless...I don't know....maybe you stole it and the person you stole it from frequents this forum?

Not saying you did that at all,but I just don't see the benefit of keeping it a secret.

It's my Nintendo Championship gold cart and I want it back.

Yea, I'm curious to know what this is as well. If its something that is sealed could be anything, but other than Atari and a few of the more obscure stuff like AES or the Pippen I'd like to think I'm well versed in console games. Maybe just not wanting a bunch of WTB pm's as he'd like to get hte most of it on ebay. Could be somethign that is just complete as well and if that's the case then the can of worms open up more!

The only "rare" one I have is the Pinball HoF for PS3, which is valued at something like $10 over retail price. But I won't sell it because I still play it. Which is another one of those things where, since a sequel is coming out... it is entirely possible that the value will drop considerably at that time.

Given what that game in question is and the recent buzz over the auction, you should capitalize upon the opportunity. The value isn't going to increase much more, if at all, after this brief window of peaked interest.
