Ok, I understand a lot of people here don't really respect most fighting games for whatever reason. Personally, I think that fighting games are one of the best possible platforms to prove who has the most skill as a gamer, but I would like to hear everyone else's opinion.

What type of game do you feel takes the most skill for competition between two players?
If you answer with a game that is an indirect form of competition (scores between players, playing against a.i.) I would like you to list another that is direct person vs person multiplayer.

For 2 player head to head, I agree with you. I think competition was never better than SF2 Turbo. Some of the folks here more into classics might say Warlords, which is epic fun head to head.

It's not quite as popular, but I love Rampart head to head, or 3 player free forall.

I agree that a fighter can show who is better when facing a rival at the local arcade. I own many boards that are all fighters but i still look for that challenge of the high score or level which a fighter can not provide. Sure you can play solo but what is the fun in that "Practice" .

that is why i got me a 60-1 to challenge myself in some games, also pinball can do the trick.

Still i enjoy a fighter over anything.

I'm putting together a SF II WW, I know it's not a classic but to me it's a classic of the fighting genre.
I do think SF II Turbo and or Champion edition are great on a competitive level, might add one of those to the collection as well.
Heck Golden Tee can be competitive.:D

Any racing game with two players set-up. Rush being a favorite, but lets not forget games like Off-road and Championship Sprint either, as they put both controls on the cab.

Also, in it's own charming way, certain platformers like Mario Bros. tended to lean more toward a good two-player melee over teamwork.

How can you forget Pong?

seriously, great head to head game.

Years after I had the atari 2600 I gained a fond appreciation for combat.

I like MKII a lot, for the head to head competition. I like beating the computer too, but it's the one on one. Street fighter 2 turbo or hyper fighting had me for awhile too.

I've discussed and defended fighters for days on here, so I'm skipping having to give a direct comp example. :p

Pinball competition can be really nerve racking. It's like playing golf at high speed. Who knows the playfield more than the other guy? Who knows the rule sets? Who can adjust their game to the quirks of that specific machine? If the game has deep rules, who takes the better strategy to maximize the point potential of each ball? Even who plays first can be a huge psychological advantage (the chasing player has advantage of last ball played and his opponent's score acting as a milestone to beat...first player has to keep playing as well as possible to keep ahead).

Video Game point competition is much more absolute in nature. All the documentaries based around it have people claiming it's super high pressure, but I think it's the tamest of the three (aside from the time factor where games take FOREVER). You game a computer's AI with a set parameter of tricks that don't alter. The same pattern used to get a high score on Friday can be repeated Saturday, Sunday, Monday, etc. In pinball the physicality keeps you from gaming the system in the same exact way. Some people only get one killer ass ball that they will never get the chance to repeat again. In fighters, you have to know how to game another human being in the moment, which is infinitely complex.

I've never actually played Warlords against someone before because I was too young for that game and I don't believe I have actually seen a cabinet with players on it before. This is the type of game that I would like to hear about though. I have also heard of people vs'ing in Rampart.
