i went down to the basement today to play some resident evil on the PS1, and on my way down, i passed by my arcade machine. on one side of it, there is no side art, and the other side was painted black (the machine itself is a street fighter 2, but it was a conversion, and i don't know what the original cabinet is). but i noticed at the bottom there was a little bit of paint chipped off, and there was COLOR UNDERNEATH! i chipped a little more paint away with a screwdriver, and sure enough, there was more color. when i chipped the black paint away, i was also scratching the side art, which isn't good...so, is there any other technique that i could use to get rid of the top coat of paint while preserving the art underneath?

Awesome find, us KLOVers cant take the suspense! Hurry and get that top coat off! I personally forgot what product but there are a bajillion threads about this you will find the answer in. Quick, get that top coat off! :)

I've wonder this myself. I heard a hot air gun will do it by heating it up then chipping it away but you got to be real careful and I'd set it on the lowest setting if you did try it. I'm a little afraid to try it myself. I've got a magic worm cab I've been thinking about doing a multi cab with. The side art kind of grown on me and it's pretty generic so it'll be good for just something to look at on the sides. Just not sure how I'd get the paint off the top on the other side and then I'd need to touch up the other side.

safe stripper has worked for me once, it the art painted or decal..sorry may have missed that.

I've had good experience with Motsenbocker's Lift Off #4. I've stripped a Millipede and a Killer Instinct back to original.

Yep it was your post I read about it on after doing a google search. I was really impressed with the results.

Those are some very impressive results- do you think this would work as well on stenciled/painted cabs?

I haven't had the opportunity to try it out on a stenciled cabinet. I do not know what the results would be. In my experience, I wouldn't hesitate to use Motsenbocker's on known vinyl side art cabinets. The Millipede was my first ever paint strip cab. My researched indicated people used all sorts of stuff to try and remove paint. This was a test of a couple of products, including brake cleaner. In this situation the Motsenbocker's was greatly superior over the other products.

I have not tested 3M Safest Stripper or Citristrip, but one member "burned" his vinyl side art on his MKII with Citristrip leaving it on too long if I recall.

I've been meaning to pull a painted junk cabinet for a while and use all the products that people suggest side by side and record the results, but that hasn't happened.

I have had good luck with 3M Safest Stripper. Atari artwork is very tough. I used straight acetone to spot clean and it didn't even phase it. Here is my Centipede (removed a layer of gray and black paint):

okay, i have some ideas of what i should get. i'll probably still do it, but the machine itself doesn't work, so it might be a little while before i get around to it. is it safe to use this stuff on the machine when the machine has all the wiring and monitor and whatnot in it?

When I stripped my cabinets, I laid them on their side, back, etc depending on which side I was stripping to prevent the chemicals from running where I didn't want them to go. I did not remove anything from my KI cabinet other than the control panel, which made it heavy to flip around.

I tried Citristrip (the aerosol spray can variety) on the front of my OutRun, trying to uncover the "red stripe," which appears to have been spray painted over. It removed everything down to bare wood :( Problem may be that the red stripe is a sticker, not "regular" side art material.

I may yet try 3M Safest Strip and/or Motsenbocker's Lift Off #4.

I also have a black-sprayed Lethal Enforcers cab, and I'd like to try getting the black off... but if nothing can remove paint from adhesive art (vice the uber-tough Atari art), then I may be SOL.
