Good day, all.

I am a fighting game enthusiast/'collector' and recently started refurbishing 1990s hardware including some of my favourite arcade game PCBs. All my knowledge about electronic hardware is self-taught and at the time of writing this post, my experience is somewhat limited. Even so, I am up for most challenges.

I hope to learn from this great community's members and grow my skillset to take on larger arcade projects in the future.

Welcome! Where in South Africa? I visited Cape Town years ago and didn't see any arcade games anywhere, so they seemed rare to me in my short time there. It's always fun to hear more about what games you saw growing up.

Welcome! I hope to visit South Africa some day! Clue us into the good arcades to visit!

When more or less were you here? I matriculated in 1999. Arcades pretty much lasted until the PlayStation came out. We have a couple of Pandora cabinet vendors, but thats more in the rural areas.

I grew up in Gauteng. We had an arcade in the shopping centre when I was in high school. First two Mortal Kombats, NeoGeo, etc. I think we had Killer Instinct, but was more interested in Time Killers (LOL). If we travelled I also played the Tekkens and Primal Rage.

When I was in primary school we had a take away ice cream shop with a few cabs, Ghosts n Goblins, Toki, Rygar and one other game which name I'm still looking for. These are the games I'm still pretty much in love with.

Oh, I'm currently in Durban KZN. Pretty far from Cape Town.

Strangely enough, the Capetonians are more into their arcade games than the Durbanites. My parents stay there - never saw any form of arcade or vendors over there.

Howzit bru? Lekker

I was in RSA in 2022 for a couple weeks, I saw one pinball machine in a mall in Joburg, and it was broken.

I found that people did generally know what video arcade machines are, they "know someone who knew a guy that used to have a Pac Man" or similar stories.

Anyway, welcome to the site. Africa is a beautiful continent and I will be back soon. Got a bit more of Namibia to explore and want to see Botswana as well, next trip.

I was there in 2003 and in Cape Town for about a week and Joburg for less than a day. I never made it to Gauteng or Durban :(

And I didn't know the Mean Girls reference either and was like WTF at first...

One week is not enough for any province. You need a week to explore the wine farms in the Western Cape alone.

Cape Town is pretty much one of the few provinces that is moving forward wrt growth and progress. It is a very popular holiday and tourist destination. So is Durban, but heck, even me I want to go on holiday in Cape Town.

Western Cape, Gauteng and Kwazulu Natal are a few of our provinces (pretty much like states in the USA, just smaller.) We have 9 provinces. Durban is in Kwazulu Natal, Cape Town in the Western Cape and Johannesburg is in Gauteng.
