Hey Fellas, I have nice Major Havoc / Tempest conversion and it has the rear cooling fan
mounted to the rear of the cabinet. Is this fan really necessary? Or can I disconnect it and hook it up every once in awhile? Its too noisy.LOL

Thanks Dave

The fan is NOT required, but it was installed to help keep things cool. Feel free to disconnect it until you have found a replacement for it.

My Donkey Kong cocktail fan is pretty loud, I don't like it but I guess it was put there for a reason. Some of the chips on the boards get hot, so I don't dare unplug it.

I have the back door off on my Tempest that started having heat issues closed up and it seems to do fine now. I would prefer a fan, just haven't got to it yet.

Tempest Question? Do I really need that noisy fan in rear cabinet?

Hey Guys,

Just wanna know if its really necessay to have this rear cooling fan thats attached to cabinet door? Or maybe there any aftermarket that I can buy thtas nice and quiet?

Thanks

Well Tempest didn't come with a fan.

With that said, people tend to put them on the game to help cool the monitor to extend the life of it, since the monitor run very hot. So anything you can do to help cool the inside of the cabinet will help.

So basically you can put any fan you want in there, as long as you can supply voltage for it. Most recommend using a 120v fan, so you can hook it to the incoming power and draw power from the game power supply loading it down even further.

You mean so you don't draw down the game's power supply?

120v from the wall won't draw down the power supply. Using 12v fans will.

120v fans are generally noisier than the 12v ones but they are also much more robust/reliable and last longer.

He's more concerned about the noise level.

I don't think there was any volume of air specified that was required for the Tempest monitor, and any air movement is better than nothing. I keep my machine about a foot away from the wall and the back door off so I haven't had heat issues. Not everyone has that space to spare.

If the sound is really bothering you, I would take a look at Jameco.com and look at the CFM rating. It's a rating for the volume of air the fan moves, but it's also an indicator as to how loud the fan will sound. Some places give the dB rating but not all do. Look for the lower CFM rating, if you install it and it still gets really hot, then add another of the exact same fan. While it will be a little louder than one, it won't be as loud as the highest CFM fan.

Tempest did NOT come with any kind of cooling fan.

Do you need a cooling fan for Tempest? NO
