Hey coders- Torpedo my Sea Wolf fantasy!

I don't currently have access to my dev PC but looking at the publicly available (undocumented) disassembly it looks fairly easy to hack (if there were enough people with an interest in it). I don't have the cab/boardset but it may turn out to be a fun project.

Features that have been discussed that should be doable:-

Freeplay maintaining attract mode
Option of timed game or max. number of misses
Extra digit for scoring
High score save (would obviously need some kind of NVRAM)

I wouldn't be interested in the aforementioned bounty but maybe it would be a nice gesture for a donation to be made to a charity if I finish it?

@philmurr I don't think freeplay is necessary with seawolf. My reasoning is if you disconnect the start button and reconnect it to the coin button in the game you have essentially made seawolf freeplay since a quirk in the code starts the game as soon as the first coin goes in anyways. It has always been my way of rigging the game for freeplay

Works for me!

If we are being greedy what about random ship patterns, and perhaps always have 2 ships on screen (if the hardware could handle that)

I've made a free play version that I think I still have. It also says free play on screen. If someone prefers that over doing the rewiring free play, lmk and I'll see if I can dig it up. Hasn't gone through a lot of testing though since I don't run my games free play.

now one of my dreams for the game would be to spice of some of the some of the words that pop up when you hit a mine
You're kinda limited to 3 characters... maybe 5 if you get rid of the explosion pieces.
They only have the 2 hard-coded phrases currently.

I'm sure I have is set to maximum duration. The game is short enough as it is!

Look, I understand people have their own opinions, but this is NOT a "Tell me how my idea is stupid." thread, so no need for more people to naysay. In MY opinion, timed games in a home use setting is dumb.

Just-
Is it possible?
Is it reasonably practical?
Would you be open to do it? (with proper expertise)
Then maybe, What would be your guesstimate fee?

Maybe I'm the only one that would pay for it, but maybe I could swing the $$$ myself. You don't know until you ask.
Is it possible? Yes.

One of my hobbies is reverse engineering these old games. And I've got a fully annotated, reconstructed assembler source of Sea Wolf. So I could hit the ground running with this one.

So, for a first pass, what about adding a digit to the score? Just to show it's possible.

All the best,
Simon

Well that makes things much easier.

I've got a partial disassembly from a project I was looking at several years ago, but it's in no-shape to reassemble.

Wow! That would be an amazing start!

Thanks!!

Freeplay maintaining attract mode
I think that's pretty easy...
There's already a string for PUSH BUTTON instead of INSERT COIN in the ROMs.

Option of timed game or max. number of misses
"Miss" needs to be defined.
Shots that miss ships?
Shots that hit mines? (Probably untenable since there are so many mines later in the game)
Ships that cross the screen without being shot? (This makes the most sense)

Ahh -- Found where to hook in to identify a missed ship... that's the hard part.
From there it's just a matter of changing some text and making that hook decrement the "timer" instead of the actual timer routine.

I should really start dropping commented disassembly up on a github somewhere, but a wiki to make it collaborative might make more sense.

Github is collaborative and has a Wiki built in.
