I spent around 3 hours playing Avatar yesterday. Literally straight out of the box at an OP's place. That's probably the first and the last time I'll get to do that.

Cost - $4300

Was it fun?
The answer is ..... yes it's most certainly fun. As I expected it's not "gotta buy one" fun but I would gladly stick a few bucks into it again.
The sound package is incredible on this. Everything is crisp and clear and really drives the game play. Very nice! The magnet is so unpredictable. Sometimes it flails the ball around mach 10 and other times it'll limp dick it straight down the middle.

The artwork is well done theme wise. The quality though is very pixelated/grainy. The best part of this machine is the 3D translite. Youtube and the likes don't do it justice. It's really neat.

The negatives:
There's one movie phrase used that is too long and used too much. It gets annoying real quick.
I had a tremendous amount of airballs. Almost all of them were in the pop area. This is a huge problem because it will eventualy break the plastic artwork that covers the left and middle pop.
The balls spend WAY too much time in the pop bumpers.
All too many times the ball came out of the pops area and dribbled STDM. Get ready to nudge!
The ramp shot - all too many times did I have a shot bounce back and forth at the entrance. I can see that ramp getting cracked up in the future.

So all in all the game Avatar is very fun but for me personally not a must have as I can see the game play getting stale.

Thank for the review.

But I LOVE it when the ball goes crazy and gets stuck in pop bumbers!
Rankin up the points.

Steve

Ya know Steverd, I gotta say I'd generally agree with you. Such an awesome feeling to see those pops going nuts! However there's a difference between having a natural pop session VS what Avatar makes it feel like it's forced. Let me try to clarify. When the ball is launched it has two paths to travel. If it doesn;t make it into the pop area it'll fall back down the right side of the round about. Other wise it's so tight quarterd for the pop exit the ball will hit the lower pop and the ball gets forced to the other pops. It feels forced/generic.

Nice little writeup, Deadly.

I'll probably get out and try it a little later this week. I'm swamped with stuff until Thursday or so.

Thanks Jeff. What's the deal with you lately? You haven't been around here or RGP much. Everything OK on your end?

Yeah, I've just been quite busy with some non-pinball related stuff. I'm launching a big gaming (console/handheld/PC) website and it's been a major time sink. I haven't worked on a pin for probably 2 months or so. I can't remember how long it's been since I've let that much time go between projects.
