I was very sick this weekend and watched alot of movies/tv show etc. I noticed that when ever there is an arcade game in a scene there are sounds from a different game in the backround even if the game is the scene.

Also if there are games in a scene in the backround with people playing them there is always someone going to town on the control panel. For example if there is a Galaga in the scene you will see two people at it playing at the same time both acting as if they have there own joystick and they will be bouncing all over the place slapping eachother on the back etc.

In commercials that use arcade sounds for backround audio they seem to use the sounds from Atari's 2600 version of Donkey Kong alot.

Is there a reason why they can not use actual sounds from the actual game, or why can't people act like they are playing the game the way the game would really be played?

I hope someone else on here will relate to what I am talking about.

I know what your saying. Companies try to show arcade games exciting to play in many ads. With unnecessary movement and actions, That you would never do while actually playing the real game. They rather look dorky. It never came to mind till your brought it up!

My guess with regards to movies is they didn't care to record audio from the actual game. It was easier to grab some stock audio file they had on the shelf or steal the sounds from another video or news clip ect. Matching the specific game sound with the actual game was not likely very important as they were just going for atmosphere. Same general idea with extras playing a game. They were there to give atmosphere. Probably didn't even have the game plugged in in many cases. So they just act like their having fun playing.

Remember the pubic-service commercial they filmed in Phet's Blue Oyster Lounge? Look at the cab they are playing at, and the game showing at the bottom...

I always wondered this also. I can remember a scene from the show Roseanne where DJ was playing an NES and there were pacman noises playing, the funny thing was he was mashing buttons furiously when he would normally have been just moving the directional pad. I also noticed the same thing on an episode of The fresh prince of bel air when Will was playing a super nintendo while I could here space invader sounds.

I've also noticed whenever they show what is clearly a Solid State pinball machine the sound you hear is from an old Electro Mechanical machine.
It sounds like the "pinball" ring tone on the iPhone.

What I want to know is why everyone in a goddamn movie or TV show that goes to the grocery store always has at least one bag with a 2 foot loaf of french bread and a bunch of carrot greens hanging out.

Also notice that the paper bags are typically neatly "cuffed" at the top.

Atari released DK & PAC sounds for use in the public domain.

No clearances or royalties were needed.

Except that DK and Pac are owned by Nintendo and Midway respectively... unless you mean the Atari 2600 version... in which case Atari did own the Pac rights, but I believe DK was a Parker Bros. license?

I like it when they're playing some game with insanely good graphics and action and they put the shitty 2600 pac-man sounds in there. If I ever make a movie I'm doing that shit! "Oh my god, this new Grand Theft Auto is the most realistic game ever! Blong, blung, bling, bleeng . . . noo-nee, noo-nee . . . bong ba bong bong bong bong."

Since people were mentioning the 2600 DK and Pac-Man sounds being used alot, I would assume that's what he meant :D DK was actually from Coleco. Of course, it sucked on the Atari, but looked really good on the Colecovision

Yeah they still use the 2600 pac sounds. I was watching some lifetime move or something, the kid had a PSP, and there were the 2600 pac noises.
I doubt he had it modded to play emulation. Even if he did, why would he want to play 2600 pac?

Love they are still associating the bleeps and bloops from 30 year old games with current games.

What about the wheelchair kid in "Rumble in the Bronx" playing a Sega Game Gear.....

.....without a game cartridge in it.

In (500) Days of Summer, the main character and his friends apparently play a cocktail version of DK that's built into their diner table in a couple of scenes. I think it was a fake setup made for the movie. They used the DK sounds from the Game Boy version as opposed to the arcade version.
