About a year ago I bought a 4 player x men arcade machine. When I tested the machine prior to buying everything worked fine. When I got it home (after a LOT of banging around) the sound stopped working.

I did the typical research and found all the information available on the sound chip that is ususally associated with these problems. I looked at my PCB and it looked like the previous owner already fixed this chip. As a result I'm guessing this isn't the problem.

There is only one speaker and it was wired directly into the Jamma harness. I'm thinking it would probably be better to somehow connect speakers to the CN8 connector on the PCB. However, I have no idea where to buy the cables necessary to do this.

I guess what I am looking for is any help getting the sound working in anyway possible. If it is possible to get stereo sound, then that's a bonus. But, I'll take any help I can get. Thank you everyone!!!!!!!

I had a KLOV member fix mine and he capped it with the exact same as caps as the original... I have another board with a similar problem to yours... did the previous owner use capacitors with the legs soldered on to the sound board? If so... make sure the solder is still good on the legs and that it didn't break during the move. You might need to lightly touch each cap to see if they have come loose.

If the paint is flaking... the acid was leaking before the previous owner capped it and may have done some harm... I am no expert but have done a lot of research. Hopefully PrairieDillo can chime in he is the man! Good luck!

only suggestions I have:

1. Trace back the speaker wires and make sure nothing has pulled loose
2. hit the test switch and see if there's a setting for Stereo or mono. It could have reset the settings when it got unplugged.(I doubt this but give it a shot)

I've been playing with Konami jamma boards for about a month so I probabaly don't know everything.

I've checked the mono vs. stereo settings in the test config and neither work.
The sound chip seems alright also. No damage as far as I can tell. I'd like to try to connect a speaker directly to that CN8 connector and give it a try, but I can't figure out where to get the cables to do that.

I would post a pic of the that sound chip so we can see if it has been repaired. Hooking up to the CN8 connector shouldn't make a difference in terms of you not having sound since that's just stereo output connector vs the mono from the JAMMA harness. Do you get any kind of sound at all....even static? Usually that chip is the main suspect for sound problems, but if it has been worked on, it's hopefully something very simple like a bad power supply or speaker.

I attached a picture that I used on a different forum. I appologise for the quality, I'm redoing my basement and there are no lights down there. If you need a better picture to assess the chip, let me know and I'll try to get a better one.

Thanks again for taking a look...

I forgot to mention, there is no static in the speaker. I'm getting nothing at all. I just ordered a "main event" pcb on ebay to drop in there and see if it gets any sound.

Unfortunately that sound chip has not been worked on and it looks to be leaking. The good news is that it can likely be fixed and given that it was working that gives it better odds. It hasn't worked since you moved it home, right? That would seem like the problem came from moving it, but these sound chips really need the work done either way.

Edit: If you've been playing it without sound for the last year you've had it, the caps have almost certainly leaked more than if the game has sat unplayed. Getting these caps replaced is a must for longevity.

I can change capacitors on all types of stuff but I don't feel comfortable enough to change out surface mount ones, so I'm gonna pay the 50 bucks and have prairiedillo do it. He only charges 10 bucks more if he has to rebuild traces. Mailing mine out this week.

Thanks for the info! I'm actually somewhat relieved to know it is the board. I was planning on adding additional boards to the cab, but I wanted to make sure everything was working properly before investing in new pcbs.

Do you know anyone who repairs the boards? Or, do you think I'm better off just replacing it?

PrairieDillo is the one around here who recaps those. With mine I just decided a new board was a better idea and bought a working one. Eventually I may have to get that one recapped but it has no issues and doesn't appear to be leaking. For now I can tell you that there's alot of 4P boards that work in that machine so have fun ^^

Well, you were right, it was the board. Today I plugged in a Main Event pcb and the second I turned it on I heard static through the speaker. The sound came out great. Now to send off the X-Men pcb to PrairieDillo. Thanks to everyone who chimmed in!!!

Just got mine back from prairie and it looks great, would recommend him to anyone who wants it to look professional.

Prarie fixed mine to absolute PERFECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I highly recommend him. Not only did he fix it perfectly, but it looks 100% professional. I was incredibly impressed. He works fast too!!
