A friend of mine picked up a Sea Devil that I recently purchased from out of town. He was going through the game for me and said everything is working except for the motor that pulls the ship targets. Attached is a pic of the coils that control/operate the motor - looks like they(or at least one) might be toast. Since these coils are part of the motor mechanism, can someone recommend the best way to replace them - or would I need to have them rewound?

Not sure if the part can be easily found, but that would be ideal. Attached below is a pic of the part I'm referring to.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Daddyboo,

You may be right that motor coil may be toast looking at the discoloration in the center. You may have to have it rebuilt. Pinball Resource does it but I don't think it's cheap but a Devil is worth the investment in my eyes. Steve also sells them too it may be cheaper to buy one than to have them repaired. I'd OHM meter them out to see what they're reading. I believe they should read between 3-4 on the lowest setting. Then the standard walk through fuses, contacts, coils, etc.

OHEMIO

you might get lucky and its not cooked. both coils should ohm out the same, or close. the toasty one will either be open or nearly shorted if its bad. if you send the motor to steve at pbr, you will get clobbered. i sent him a pitch and bat motor that only needed the little nylon drive gear. i got the motor back, " rebuilt" , for 150 bucks. ps- the coil was installed backwards, the motor ran backward and was nearly wiped again. try 414 763-7604, rich. he has a lot of stuff. you can rewind the coil by hand if you get the proper gauge wire and carefully count the # of turns. or find a used one, or got to steve and get it over with.

Thanks for the comments and advice guys. I hadn't thought about calling Rich - so I did and he's looking into it. Would rather replace the part and then re-wind the coils myself to have as a backup motor if ever needed.
Seems odd to me that these were built with the coils attached to the motors rather than removeable for reasons like I'm experiencing. Must be a reason for it.

Pinnut - I know you have a Sea Devil, I assume the two gear boxes on the ship motor are directional? I wasn't aware the ships went both directions. Can you explain?

the coils are removable, you have to drill out the rivets and split the cases to get them out. there is usually oil/grease in the gearbox that can get hard as a rock and cause it to not turn, stripping the nylon gear. you can often heat the gearboxes with a heat gun to loosen the grease. all the gears are metal except one, the one that strips. if you split it, match mark everything, pay careful attention to everything, including little shims under the gears and motor armature. each motors rotation is the opposite of the other. a relay kicks in one motor, or the other, to make the ships go one way or the other. also, note how the coils are mounted. there is a little slot in the iron core. that determines direction, depending on if its on the left or right of the motor.

Ok, if I have to go that route I'll make note of your procedure. Looking at the video the ships look one directional (from right to left looking through the periscope). When would the ships move the other direction/right to left?
I did notice on the Sea Raider vids that the ships look to turn and move in both directions, but not on Devil vids.

Don't want to hijack, and apologies for the intrusion, but I figure a couple of Sea Devil owners would be reading this thread...
Anyway, I recently bought a Sea Devil (to go next to my Sea Raider) and the marquee is flaking something fierce. If anyone could scan (or even take a couple of good straight - on pics) I would _really_ appreciate it!

good luck with your motors :)
cheers

No problem Tim, we Sea Devilers need to stick together :) if you have no luck getting what you need before Mine arrives, I'll try to get some good quality photos to you if that will work.

Thanks man.. that would be awesome.. I'm going to try and vectorize it... given my amazing artistic skills, that should only take about 10 years :004_sbiggrin:
