Need some advice for a newbie. I turn on the machine and all the lights (bulbs) come on, both on playfield and backbox, nothing else. I hear a humming noise. I checked all fuses and they are good. Im hoping someone went through something similar to this. This is for a Bally Pool Sharks. Any help is much appreciated.

Do you mean every bulb, or just the general illumination bulbs? (Do the lights under the playfield inserts stay on)

I assume you just mean the GI bulbs. Those lights should be non-cpu controlled, and should come directly off the transformer. They will come on with power regardless of the status of the CPU.

In other words, your game is dead in the water. Those lights mean nothing.

I had issues like that with some of my system 80 Gottliebs and I believe 8 out of 10 times it was a grounding issue.....

Only things that come on are playfield lights and backglass lights and nothing else. No coin up or anything. What should I do?

Yep, you have to start at the beginning. Obviously your CPU is not booting.

You can start off by looking for voltage test points on the power supply and the CPU. If your CPU isn't getting +5 volts, then it will not boot.

I will bet your problem lies here, because the boards should be doing something if they have power.

How exactly did you check the fuses?
Did you look at them, or use a multimeter?

Also, please add your location. You never know when you are local to another member. Folks have been known to help out other locals...

Thanks, i'll test those later today. What is the large grey cylinder that is to the bottom right of the boards? Looks like a capacitor. Does that have anything to do with powering the boards?

Dude, you have alot of reading to do.

First off, the game manual to familiarize yourself.
http://www.ipdb.org/files/1848/Bally_1990_Pool_Sharks_Manual.pdf

Next, the repair basics guide:
http://www.pinrepair.com/begin/index.htm

Finally, read the system 11 guide:
http://www.pinrepair.com/sys11/index.htm

The sys. 11 guide is a bit confusing, because it covers system 9 too. You'll probably have to read that one a few times in between hands-on experience. I always understand more after attempting some things, then reading those sections again.

Pool Sharks

Does the displays come on? If not your not getting any High Votage . I had a pool sharks for 10 years never had a problem with it.
