Ok this is really embarrassing. I want to paint my pacman control panel and put a new cpo on it but i can't get the fricking joystick off!!! I googles it and did a search on here. Is there a trick to this? thx

There is a c-clip holding the joystick handle on from the bottom of the joystick. It can be removed with a flat tip screwdriver, just push it off.

Got the clip off but can't get plastic white ball on the bottom to slip out so i can slip the joystick off.

Bastard is probably rusty on the joystick shaft.. need to use some elbow grease and a good vise. I used a Dremmel to get my old centering grommet out, that was the cause for all. Remember, elbow grease!

yeah, the centering grommet that's sandwiched in the middle of everything has a metal ring that rides against the joystick shaft. after years of abuse many of these rings have rusted to the shaft and it may take some force to separate the two.

of course, that old rubber grommet may have torn or be disintegrating; several sources (including Bob Roberts) sell new replacements.

Twist the red ball until it breaks free from the centering grommet. Once you have the stick out, lightly sand the shaft before putting it back in. Doesn't hurt to spray it down with WD-40 either. Just don't take a hammer and beat that sucker out, because you will mushroom the end of the shaft.

Hi Dokert,

I twisted the joystick and still nothing. I have attached a picture showing the white ball at the bottome of the joystick that i can't seem to remove. Maybe i am not trying to take it apart correctly? I just don't want to destroy it so thought i would ask again and post a picture.

thx,

Braido...

It is rusted in place, spray it with WD-40. Mark and remove the leaf switches. Take a rag and a set of vice grips to hold the white ball without damaging it and twist it until it comes free. Same deal to get the Red ball and shaft out of the centering grommet.

Do you have a gear puller? I used one to get the rubber centering grommet off of my Pac joystick (along with some vice grips) and it worked great.
