Help with Major Havoc monitor rotation in a Tempest cabinet

Hi,

I've got a Major Havoc Tempest conversion which I've been putting together from parts. The Tempest cabinet has not been cut for the horizontal mount yet and I am trying to do that part...

There was a template that came with the conversion kit for getting the positioning perfect, but I have been unable to find it or even a scan of it. I was wondering if anyone here could help me out with this.

A trace of a converted cabinet would work, but I would like it to be from one that was cut using the official template because I have the MH cardboard bezel and I want it to be perfectly aligned.

Thank you for any assistance.

Search the threads for guys that own one. They may not be searching MH threads. I could use the same template, but I had figured I would just trace the hole on the current vertical setup onto a horizontal piece of wood to be installed.

Are you saying to track down people here who own MHs and PM them about it? Sounds kind of annoying for the people in question.

Yeah I could just trace the Tempest hole like you are saying, but I want the vertical placement to be exact. I may end up doing it that way in the end though if I don't find a template. I am surprised there isn't a scan online somewhere, since every other document from the kit is available as a pdf.

It could be annoying, but members are generally cool about stuff. I don't think it hurts to ask once. I guess if it doesn't feel right for you then waiting is your option.

As far as vetical placement goes I would imagine that if you locate the center of the horizontal setup in the same spot as the vertical setup, you be pretty darn close if not right on.

I wonder if Atariscott would have this...? Maybe shoot him a pm,, he's good people.

Bump for help. Anyone have this template?

I just looked through my "kit" and I do not appear to have a template either. Looking at the Conversion Instructions for Tempest TM 267 (1st Print) page 26 is shows the template and it implies the only place to cut is the lower corners to clear the edges of the frame. I am not sure if its to scale...I would have thought you would have to widen the hole, overall, right to left. Its been a while since I have been in a Tempest to recall if the hole is wide enough factory.

Worse case make your own template. You already have the dimensions and the like, they are just 90 degrees rotated. Make a template from the existing opening on poster board the rotate them lining up what is the right side of the opening with the existing bottom.

Yes, you have to widen the hole in addition to cutting a slot for the monitor frame base. It literally is the same shape as the hole that is there for the Tempest orientation, but turned 90 degrees.

Everyone tells me to just trace the hole that is there and turn it. I appreciate the advice but this is just too janky for my OCD to handle. Unless I can find a way to position the hole behind the MH cardboard bezel and know exactly how the CRT face is going to fit in there...

Maybe it's not as complicated as I am making it out to be... maybe I am being ridiculous... I don't know.

I guess I'll start bugging people individually as suggested. I'm getting a headache from playing MH with my head turned 90 degrees.

I PM'd Modessitt about this, but he hasn't gotten back to me, yet. If he can't find that template, it simply never existed.

I have a MH in tempest.. It does not look like any kind of an exact cut.. I would say pull your monitor, rotate you paper bezel and mark points where the monitor needs to go..

I think you will have room to move the monitor a bit once you get it in..

Yeah, it is a bit ridiculous, but I am the SAME way and I, like you, even realize it!!! After I typed my response the other day it hit me the same way. I was going to have to wing it or find a template. CRUD!!

Countdown to ELutz finds this thread and comments on my OCD....

Xyla, if you want to bring it up to Phoenix sometime, I can help ya do it...

Well, the large hole for the monitor wouldn't be an exact cut, since the instructions are to cut it with a jigsaw. The thing that is exact is the positioning of the four bolts in relation to where they used to be.

The template that came with the conversion kit had 8 small holes in it. You placed it onto the cabinet so the bolts in the vertical positions (Tempest) came through 4 of the holes. This gave you 4 additional holes that marked where to drill. I have attached the page from the conversion kit instructions that shows what I am talking about.

The other thing is, you cannot just turn a Tempest cardboard bezel 90 degrees, it won't fit at all. A new bezel was included in the conversion kit. I paid $50 to get one, so I'd really like to make sure the monitor is lined up perfect with the MH bezel. The alignment with the bezel is whole reason I am extremely hesitant to just wing it.

Mrbill, if you felt inclined and weren't too inconvenienced, you could help by pulling the monitor from your MH and taking a piece of paper or cardboard and punching it through the mounting bolts. Then you could punch through the other side from the inside of the cabinet through the old Tempest bolt holes, and then trace the large hole. This would create an accurate template, assuming your machine was converted properly. If you've got the real MH bezel (Atari part# 0424442-01, printed on the outer edge of the bezel) then that should be the case.

I'm glad I'm not the only obsessive person here trying to make my machine perfect.

Wing it on a spare piece of plywood....assuming you cannot get a template from someone. I wouldn't just wing it on the original tempest wood either. Personally I would rather have a new piece of wood in there anyway with only the one monitor hole and not a big "+", but that's just me.

Its not that complicated.. You really don't need a template..

you cut the notches for the side of the monitor frame to pass through the wood. Even with the lower line, extend it out. Your cutting out somthing like a 1" square..

Then shove the montior into the hole. It will not fall though, so no need to secure it. Try the bezel. Figure out how much you need to raise it. Use wood screws to secure it in place.

if its slightly off, loosen the screws and move the monitor. there is probably 1/2 inch of play with the frame. Even if you blow it, you just made 4 small screw holes...

I would just use screws, you can get all carried away and use carriage bolts..

I just bought my Major Havoc in a Tempest conversion cab. Here a few pics with a tape measure in the pic for reference. Hope this helps with your project.

Thanks so much for the photos of your monitor. I didn't even consider that would be an easy way to get the measurements.

I was attempting to deduct where to drill and cut from your photos, but was having a little trouble due to the resolution and camera lens distortions. It occurred to me that there are only two measurements I need to be able to cut this perfect. I was hoping you would be kind enough to measure them and just post the results. I have attached a edited portion of your photo showing where...

Just wanted to say thanks for the new photos. They look like they will work out great... but I haven't had a chance to get back to this project yet.

I will report back once I have, and if all goes well, with completed photos.
