I am trying to get my Asteroids Deluxe machine working, and I think that I am getting close but need your help. I just purchased a different board and power supply (not the brick one), both were supposed to have been tested and OK. I have attached a picture of what is on the screen. I get a beep when I try to credit it up and when I push the the 1 or 2 player button, but nothing else. Don't know if this is a monitor problem or something else. Any suggestions on what the problem or the resolve is would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like it's in test mode. Trying to remember where the test mode switch is on that board.

Thank you, that was it. I have a bigger problem now though, I flip the switch down and now I get nothing, the screen just goes black. Any ideas?

Oh... and make sure the coin door is closed. There's a switch there that won't let the game power up if the door is open.

OK, here's what I did/found:
1 - I actually pulled the button out on the coin door switch
2 - I cycled the game on with the test switch in normal position and no sounds and still nothing on the screen. I got beeps before when I tried to coin it up and when I pressed the 1 or 2 player button but nothing now.
Any other ideas?
Thanks again for all your help!

As Maxstang mentioned, did you turn the brightness up on the monitor? (*edit - sorry, just saw the pics.)

The beeps are the response to a working button when it's in test mode. IIRC you have to push the switch right then back left to enter/exit test mode.

If still nothing check voltages, PS could be failing.

If I tested it correctly the power supply is bad or going bad. I am going to post a want ad for a brick power supply. Thanks for everyones help!

Remember that this game has a two part power supply. The brick in the bottom of the game and the ARI board near the game board. Check the fuses in the brick and then the voltages at the ARI board. It doesn't bode well that you had a good test screen and now nothing, however.

I'd check or reseat the wires going to the test switch - maybe the switch is dirty or bad. You had a good test pattern before should fire right up.

Also - post where your located incase someone is near you that can help.

Thanks for the great advice, I will check out the suggested and let you know what I find. I am located in Tinley Park, IL. Thank you again!

HELP with Asteroids Deluxe

I replaced the brick power supply, the ARI board, the PCB board. The test switch is clean, and I have re-seated the wires on it. Still nothing when the switch is in normal position. Could the test switch be bad?? If not, any other ideas?

Wish i had seen this post earlier....

You have a board problem. The test mode isn't very far into the programming, which is why you see a picture then, but not in game mode. I remember having a similar issue once. You say you replaced the PCB board. Is the new board a guaranteed working board? Is the red LED on the board lit up?

Asteroids Deluxe

Yes, it was supposedly tested for 24 hours before it was shipped, and yes the red light on the board is on.

When your test switch is off, is the red light on the monitor board on? Does it change when you flip the test switch back on?

Oh, and turn the brightness back down to what looks good in your test screen. if you can see the test screen, then you should be able to see the game screen...

The monitor contrast is set correctly. The red light stays on in both game and test mode.

I think he's talking about the spot killer light on the deflection board on the monitor itself and not the power led on the cpu pcb if that is the light you are referring to. If the spot killer light comes on when going from test mode to game mode then there is a problem with the cpu pcb. Put the game in test mode while off and turn it on. Are there any beeps after it is turned on? If so check the manual to find out what the code is. There could be bad ram preventing the image from even coming up. In that case you should hear some ram codes. Of course other things could be wrong... but with no game and a good cross hatch I'd expect it to be something fairly simple like ram. If it was a rom then something would be displayed in test mode on the screen indicating the failed rom location but it looks clean.
