HELP!! UMK3 just stopped working! No sound or video!

So, I was playing my UMK3 and it was working fine! I shut it off, and then went to turn it back on so my friend could see it, and we could play. Nothing...
The marquee lit up, and there was power, but no video and no sound. Just all of a sudden. I literally did not change or touch a thing except for the controls...
Any idea what happened? I'm a total noob to these things!
Please HELP!

It sounds like your power supply may have went out. If the game will not play blind that's a very likely suspect. You would need a multimeter to check the voltages though. It should be very straight forward is putting in a new one of it that's the case.

If its the original big grey switcher that midway used a lot then its probably bad. They have a tendency to just stop working instead of gradually. I just replaced the one in my KI for this reason.

If it were the power supply, would the marquee light up? The marquee never stopped working, and when I turn it off, the monitor has the little red dot that shrinks in the center.
Also, I tried it about an hour or so, later and it worked!! I shut it off, because I had to leave, (stupid! I should have left it on) and then when I tried it again, it didn't work.

I'm stumped!

The power supply has nothing to do with the function of the marquee light. The marquee light runs off of 120 volts AC not the DC output of the power supply. The power supply is only for providing voltages to the game PCB and to the coin door lights. If it came back on then the +5 may just be adjusted low, but again, you'd need a multimeter to check that. The monitor is almost certainly fine also.

Thanks! I am learning this as I go, so thanks for being patient with me! I will have to figure out how to test the power supply and replace it. If it is as straight forward as said above maybe I will just do that anyway! Now, I need to figure out how to do that, lol

Its a 1. Simple, usually just screwed down with a couple small screws.....Just label or note what terminal each wire came off of, and put it on the same terminal on your new power supply.

I had a issue with my umk3 once or twice. before you spend any money you might want to check the safty switch on the back panel and also the power switch. good luck

trust me, the hardest part will be mounting the new power supply in... and that's not really hard at all. :)

I had to do the same thing on my KI (before I restored it to KI), I was able to get it to work a few times before I knew what I was doing by powering it down, leaving it off for a bit, and then turning it back on.

KenLayton actually found a fix for those old units Midway had, and I guess it's caused by a resistor that goes bad. what the power supply is actually doing is going into a high voltage shutdown.
