A buddy of mine is going nuts trying to remember an arcade game. Here is what he emailed me...

I remember it having a fire button, transform button. Maybe there was a bomb button but I dont recall that. You would go from a robot to a plane. I am unsure if there was a half robot/half plan mode like robotech had. I know it came out to follow the nerds who were watchign robotech but i recall it wasnt called robotech

I have no fucking clue.

"Thexder" comes to mind, but that was a computer/console game, never in the arcade.

Super Space Fortress Macross, or one of it's sequels is the first thing that comes to mind.

They are Robotech (or more correctly Macross) based.
this what I was thinking as well....but years ago I had a sh*tty multi jamma board that had a handful of old nes games on it...poor mans Playchoice at best...anyway there was a horizontal Macross game on there....

I know the game but can't remember the freaking name.

I thought it was Side Arms, but looking at the screens I think it's something else. Maybe MagMax ("The player ship can be powered-up by collecting robot parts (legs, torso, and big gun) to turn ship into striding robot.")

I still think there's another one I can picture in my head, but can't remember the title of.

EDIT - Oops. OZ beat me to it while I was posting

You can see the robot change into the plane in the pic at the bottom left:
