I have an nba showtime on NBC. The game would reset it self after awhile of play soi asked a couple of guys I know they said it sounded like a power supply issue. So I checked the voltage and turned it up on the switcher. The thing is the lowest setting I could put it on to keep the game playing without resetting is 5.6-5.7 on the+5 and the-5 and 14.0 on the +12. The volts at on the AC coming to the switcher are 126.0. Could some one tell me if this is normal? If not what should I replace? Thank you in advance.

remove the edge connector and see if you have burn traces on the jamma connector. You need to fix that and change those pins in the harness if its bunt. Cranking up the PS will not help if they are burnt. The volage is not getting through.

you need to check voltage on the board(not the PS). If you can get them off the edge connector, thats good. Or stick a meter in the HDD connector on the board and read the +5v there.

If you want to think long term, upgrade to a compact flash and convert you showtime into blitz/showtime. Vegas sucks a ton of juice and the HDD does not help..

contact this guy(he also posts on here)..

I wouldn't call the Vegas a power hog or say it sucks a ton of juice. I got a Road Burners at work that I cleaned the JAMMA edge with a pencil eraser and the difference between the molex plug and roms narrowed all the way down to .03V. granted, the cab is unique to the game and unlike the Midway (MK-style) cabs I'm used to with about 3 feet of wire and has a much shorter wiring run.. my Sportstation in a Blitz cab had a difference of about .15V if I recall, it was none too significant. I dialed both games to 5.10V at the roms. I've witnessed the Road Burners running stable as low as 4.9V (before I became OCD at power supply adjusting) so alas, no, I don't think it sucks a ton of juice at all, and that's with the hard drive plugged into the board too.

if you clean your JAMMA edge there should be zero reason to ever run your power supply at 5.6V, cause you're only going to damage the edge connector [further] by doing that.

if your +5V contacts are burned up, I wish you the best of luck. you can try really really hard with a pencil eraser and some rubbing alcohol to clean it up, but I'm sure it's going to stay that way. unlike its Seattle counterpart, there's not much in the way of a trace to connect to and layer it with solder (which is a HORRIBLE idea unless you can connect it to the adjoining trace).

the original JAMMA board on my Sportstation had those all burned up and I wound up dropping about $100 on a replacement. not my idea of a good time, but it's a lot better than running my power supply at 5.4V just to have the components running at about 4.89V.

I wound up doing the pencil eraser trick on my Sportstation and then an Area 51, and have been a fan of it ever since.. pulling all my game boards out and doing it to all of them. :D

You guys are fawesome no that's not a type o! It's f***ing and awesome put together. I just woke up so I'll check the board. I'm really new to this I've only been collecting about a month so if there are anythings I should know about removing the board and checking power at the board please let me know. I would hate for my kids to come running downstairs because they think mom is frying chicken only to find dad fried inside a game cab. Any who thanks for the advise and support!!

I meter at roms, but on the Vegas there's hardly any difference in voltage at all between the roms and the hard drive plug on the board. it's easiest if you plug the hard drive into the game board and you can't use a separate hard drive plug coming off your power supply for this test.

with the hard drive plugged into the board, there's 4 wires on a hard drive power connector: red (+5V), black, black (both grounds), and yellow (+12V). set your meter to 20V DC range, put the red probe into the red wire hole, and the black probe into either of the black ground wire holes. it's probably easiest to do this with the game off if you're not familiar with how to jam the probes in there, just so you don't accidentally slip off and hit something else.

a fun little game I play is I check what my voltage is coming off the power supply first, then I do the rom/hard drive plug check. if you have a substantial drop in voltage between the power supply and your game board, then you're probably looking at a cruddy edge connector, which as I mentioned before you can clean pretty sufficiently with just a pencil eraser. do each contact up and down first, then go left to right across the entire edge connector. wipe the little eraser fragments off the board, you don't want those getting stuck anywhere.

then check your voltages again and hopefully be amazed at the improvement.

you can check your power supply voltage with the red and black wires too at the 9-pin molex plug (for box type power supplies) or at the +5 and GND or COM lugs on a screw terminal power supply.

if you have any questions PM me.

It worked

Thank you guys so much! I took off the harness and examined the pins no burns thats right Smithers no burns but the pins did look dirty as hell. I cleaned them as instructed with a pencil eraser and plugged everything back in. Drum roll please.... turned game on set the voltage at +5.1 -5.0 & +12.2. got similar readings at board. the game has been running for an hour and not one reset!!!! So I guess im alright Spider. No I thought you said Spider Im alright.
Seriously thank you guys. I got in touch with Brandon at summit arcade and ill be converting the Showtime to a Sportstation and running the hard drive off the ps as he recommended. ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU!!!! Hope I can return the favor.
