Help needed with Zookeeper

Maybe I'm not using the right names for the boards. Here's what they're called in the manual from top to bottom:
-Video Processor(this is the one I swapped from Qix)
-ROM/I.O.
-Data/Sound (I mistakenly said I swapped this one)

So far, no progress, except for knowing that Qix's Video Processor does not work in Zoo Keeper. It works perfectly in Qix, though.

The video board is the same. I don't think it would hurt to swap them, meaning see if the zk video will work in the Qix this will test all of the 4116 rams at once.

the main ( big) rom board can be tested in the Qix. The only catch is you have to swap the roms.

Those are the correct names. It's not safe saying top or middle or bottom board as some cabs have them mounted different. also their should be 3 chips on the data/sound board that you could swap with the Qix board. I don't want to get to far ahead and cause confusion.
It may be a good thing if there was no change using the Qix video board. It could be telling us the problem is else where.
also check the data/sound board to see if it has been converted.

OK, I took the Rom board from Qix, put Zoo Keeper ROMs in it, and tried it out. It didn't work.

Also, I realized that I have a second Data/Sound board. I put it in and had the same results. So, I'm assuming that the Data/Sound Board works.

At this point, I'm led to believe that there's a problem with the actual ROMs. I'll find out tonight when I take the ZK ROM board and put the Qix ROMs in it and put it Qix. If that works, then i know it's not the board itself.

It's either that, or something with the wiring. I tested all of the voltages and they're all pretty good. I did have a 4.59 instead of 5 on the Video board, which is a little low, but I doubt it's the culprit.

4.59V on the 5V rail is WAY too low. I'd be almost certain it wouldn't work at that voltage. I'd adjust that up to ~5.1.

Of course not... you need twice as much ROM space and a daughterboard for ZK.

ZK Data/Sound board needs mods from the Qix Data/Sound board to work.

Yes, I put in all of the ROMs and included the daughterboard. I actually have two Data/Sound boards specifically for ZK. I have two for Qix also. It's good to have spares :)

DogP- I checked that at the board. I'm not sure I can crank it up. I'm using a computer power supply and I don't think it has an adjustment knob. I wonder if that's the problem after all. I'll check.

Worst case scenario is I'll make an adaptor for a switching PS and try that.

Is the voltage at all boards low, or just the video board? If it's just the one board, you may have some bad connectors... or you could add your own jumper wires to connect it directly back to the power supply. I would use an adjustable power supply though.

Well, I got it up to 4.89, which is still low. I don't think it's the problem, but I'm going to replace it anyway.

Here's why I don't think it's the problem- I dug out a second Video board and plugged that in and got the same result. I then took that same board over to Qix and it worked perfectly. So, I've got a known working video board in there now. No more worries about RAM.

I also used two data boards at this point and both gave me the same result, so I'm guessing it's not them since there was no change.

I've just about ruled out the Power Supply because I then took ALL of the boards over to Qix and plugged them in and got the same result. It's OK, everyone, I have the coin processor bypass chip on my ROM board, so I was able to use the existing Qix wiring.

So, I've changed out everything I can think of, and I've checked everything I can think of. It has to be bad ROMs, right?

Do you have the white(power good) wire hooked up? And is working. This should help.
4.89 is to low 5-5.5 is a must.

Here's the pinouts for a PC power supply:

Pin Function Wire color

1. Power Good * Orange
2. +5Vdc Red
3. +12Vdc Yellow
4. -12Vdc Blue
5. Ground Black
6. Ground Black

7. Ground Black
8. Ground Black
9. -5Vdc White
10. +5Vdc Red
11. +5Vdc Red
12. +5Vdc Red

The color info is a reference. There is no strict standard for colors so the
actual colors used for your supply might be different !

Here's the pinouts of the original power connectors:

Connector "J3"
==============
01/02|RED|+5V
03/05/07/11|BLK|Gnd.
04|BRN|-5V
06|YEL|+12V
08|ORG|-12V
09| |n/c
10|BLU|+12V
12|GRN|+12V
13| |n/c
14|WHT|MRST

Connector "J4"
==============
01/02|RED|+5V
03/05/07/11|BLK|Gnd.
04|BRN|-5V
06|YEL|+12V
08| |n/c
09| |n/c
10| |n/c
12| |n/c
13| |n/c
14|WHT|MRST

MRST is the reset circuit.

That's interesting....can you "play" those ZK boards(with bypass chip) in the Qix??

Good luck with trying to fix it.

Not many new developments, but here's where I stand.

I'm going to order a new power supply from Arcade Shop.

Right now with the coin door area test button connected, I get the pattern of colors that waves arcross the screen and the LEDs on the Video board stop on 00-0101 when I've pressed the test switch on the video board.

With the coin door area test button disconnected, I get random garbage on the screen and the LEDs don't light at all when I press the Video board's test switch.

That's it. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

That's the arcadeshop PS. I ordered it yesterday so hopefully it will arrive soon.
Thanks for all of your help. Hopefully we'll have it up and running soon. I've been wanting a working Zoo Keeper for at least 4 or 5 years. Luckily I've been playing on a multi-Taito like dj djns posted about.
