HELP needed with TUTANKHAM machine pharoahs curse??

Hello,

My Tutankham machine seems to be having some graphics problems and certain erratic sprite behaviors.

So i pull out the meter and the +5 volt is at 4.19 , also the switcher is making a strange sound , likes it getting ready to supernova.

the game was hacked by someone and the original power supply was replaced with a switcher.

So i install a new switcher and set it to 5.0 volts.

i plug in the board and power up the game.

now all i get is different screens of solid colors (whole screen green, then red etc.)

So i back the voltage down to 4.75 and try again.

now i see the attract screen running but is all messed up.

so i put the new switcher at 4.19 volts and the game comes on and seems fine.

i play it for a few minutes waiting for the inevitable crash and it plays but has minor sprite problems like the bitmapping of the explorer is messed up, monsters freeze in corridors etc. but still continues playing.

Any Ideas?? Theories??

Thanks.

I'm shooting from the hip, but it sure sounds like you have some grounding issues. If the game runs fine at +4V, then the ground at the board must be somewhere around -1V. check ALL of your ground connections, from the power supply to the board, back to the prong on your power plug, etc, etc.

Where are you measuring the 5 volts at? At the power suplly's screw terminals or on the gameboard on one of the chips?

Are your meter batteries fresh?

How is this wiring harness hacked? A jumble of tiny wires? Wire gauge too small? Not enough wires to the board?
