Help Needed with GQ-x4 Programmer Want to burn some NEOGEO roms..

Hey Guys.. How are you all doing.

I want to burn Neogeo roms using a GQ-x4 programmer that I just got.
am totally new to this eproms / programmers thing.

Do I have to convert the BIN files to ROM before I try to burn them in to the chips ?
what's the right setting for burning this roms ?

(there are several options one's you open a file to burned :
file format
read mode
fill mode
file offset )

am using M27C322 for C,V,P (a friend just advice me not to use those for the V roms since
V's are 8 bit and M27C322 runs on 16 bits only) but I don't really know about it..
for the S1 am using AM27c512 and for the M1 M27C1001

Thanks in advance..

No.

Those options relate to reading the data file into the buffer, and are not programming the EPROM. There is rarely a reason to change any of them from defaults. Leave them alone. You'll be fine.

I have no idea what C, V or P are referring to, but you will need an adapter to program a M27C322 with the GQ-4X. Do you have a ADP-054 or ADP-055 adapter?

Darren.

Thanks for replaying.. ( now I know I don't have to convert those files and that I have to leave alone those default options .. great)

Yes I got a ADP-054 for the 42 pins chips,

Hoo Sorry The V, C, P, S, M refers to :

The chips that begin with C are the chips used to store the graphics or sprites.

Chips that begin with V store the various sound samples.

The P chips contain the actual game code.

The M1 chip is the controller for the sound chip.

The S1 chip is used to store fonts, the game logo health bars and other game details.

Also.. This is what I get when I launch the programmer software :

Ready
H/W Re: GQ-4X Re-1.42
USB Driver Re.2.0
Software Re. 6.00
Checking new software on server...
Contacting software server failed

Don't know if this is the last rev. ver. of this softwware..

Hope yours works, because their support sucks DICK and when mine stopped working after a couple months, you can't get them to tell you the time of day, much less exactly where I should shove their piece of shit programmer :)

No.

Not even the file format option (not to change it to .rom) ?

What exactly are you trying to do? Reburn roms for a neo geo cart? so you want to make a bootleg Neo-Geo Cart?

I dont think anybody here is going to help you with that.

as you can't just 'reprogram' a neo geo cart with your favorite game, it does require more of an understanding that just "slap in some roms, and burn"

if you need help with Burning a Bios chip, that different.

the CQ-4X Software will timeout if you don't have internet, no need to "update" the software, as it hasn't been updated in a long time.

K4SW.. Just to clarify

Nope , it is for gaming purpose.. I use the Unibios option in games very often
In the past I obtained some mvs games at neogeo.com and ebay knowing that those games where not in working conditions..

I was about to get me a multigame cart from the many sites that are selling those at this days, but then I realized that this carts does not work with the UNIBIOS chip..

I hope it help to clarify my intentions..

Find the MAME set for the game you are trying to fix. Those ROM images will be binary, regardless of the actual name of the file, and require no conversion whatsoever.

I would also suggest that you start a new thread with the name of the cartridge you are trying to repair and what is happening when you attempt to run the game. You will get alot more of the people with experience and suggestions for fixing Neo-Geo games to look at it.

I doubt you will have to replace all the EPROMS, in fact, I've fixed a couple of non-working Neo carts and didn't have to replace any ROMs. I just fixed some broken traces or resoldered the mask ROM pins.

Nope.. Is a shock troopers cart.
I were able to burn the S1 and M1 chips but for some reason the programmer can't burn the M27c322 chips I disconnected Hub, external hard drive and everything but still..
I think it might be a voltage problem.. I contacted the seller but nothing still..

Why's everyone giving this dude such a hard time? I don't give a damn if he's trying to 'bootleg' the pope's own private Neogeo games, or GhostLopper, or wtf ever...

Anyhow. I don't think your problem is voltage or power or anything. Newer chips require the lowest voltages; it's old-ass EPROMs that may need external power when programming.

Try downloading the latest version of the software:
http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/mcumall_download.asp

And see if you can get it to sucessfully connect to the internet. It might find that your unit's firmware isn't the latest, and d/l & install it.

I'd say it's because he doesn't have the balls to admit that's what he's actually doing. Anyone trying to repair a cart wouldn't reburn all roms.

Do you have the jumpers set correctly for a 27C322 on the ADP-054 adapter?

J1 (top left corner on the adapter board) should have 2 and 3 shorted if you are burning a 27C322, 1 and 2 should be shorted for all other EPROMs. I've made the mistake of forgetting to change that jumper before myself. It causes it to fail immediately when attempting to write (blank check works, though).

I also couldn't care less wether he is attempting to get us to help him build a conversion cart (although I didn't realize Shock Troopers was worth building vs just buying the MVS cart), but I agree with Hewitson.

If you are going to do it, be honest with us about what you are wanting to do... Lots of users on this forum are against conversions and don't appriciate when they are tricked into giving advice to someone who is doing it. There are still people here who will help you, though.

Hi How you all doing..

I want it first apologize to the members that felt uncomfortable with this post.
(was not my intention)..

Also wanted to say thanks to the members who helped me with the GQ-4x programmer problem (Is working now) Updating the software (Suggested by DarrenF)
and making the bridge for pins 2-3 on the programmer fixed the problem as dbstallman pointed me to do..

and thanks to the members not helping me and instead making statements or assumptions on the purpose of what am doing.. You all helped me in one way or another..

I was to me very obvious for the title what my intention was.
every time I read the thread I feel like i killed some bodies mom or something like that.
but then I realize am using tools I bought myself :
- laptop
- programmer
- electricity
- a non working cart a got from Gwat at ebay, The auction said it was working..
Jumpers have been soldered or something and the board looked not to good
The Edge contacts looked like if somebody used a belt sender on them..
(The Indian guy who tried to help with the transaction giving me a diferent game/cart very kind guy but I was so angry the cart was not working)
I bet you, he still remember how angry I was. Specially when he started trying to convince me to stop collecting games and instead to buy a life insurance policy he was selling me..

I had read about conversions in the past and decided to convert it without knowing if any of this chips was damage or something.. A few things start happening in my mind about specifics/general aspects about hardware and software in those chips. anyways I converted the mvs to aes and it worked..(I used a site that explain how to do it)
I played/keeped the game for long time.
Was I trying to make a career from this ? no

I work in home improvement.. And no am not intending to start selling neo or sega or nintendo or any other console/arcade bootleg games as part of my day to day activities..

My interest in been able to use one of this programmers was not just repair a cart but also been able to use it for playing purpose for more than one game ..

All this things got me in to reading and trying to learn how to write some code in C language for a froger game am working on.
I am not a computer guy, and it takes me lots of time to understand how games are made and burned in to those chips.. My animations or collisions D. Doesn't look to good for now but I'll keep trying lol..

And no, is not that I don't have the balls to say I was building a bootleg I would have said that to you, if you asked right after I Initially posted..
I love you all, including you Hewitson, because I know your intentions and everybody's intentions here are good..

I'll be posting a new thread for a non working
Neo Mr Do! MVS cart when I get the time..

Thanks again to all..

sorry my question was just asking if you were trying to make a ghostlop , I was just gonna help ya with it. No harm from me.

Don't even mention it. LOL I dind't even know if you was about to give me a kick in the ass or if you was gonna help me.. I just noticed your sign and visited your store..

Summitt Arcade Home Page, I'll keep it in mind when buying games and stuffs..

Milton..

Glad to help.

Also, while it was obvious to you what you meant in the thread title, pretty much everyone in this forum assumes people are attempting to repair PCBs as oppposed to doing conversions. That is why when you didn't specificly state that was your intention they felt decieved. Bootleggers lurk this forum for tips and therefore many here are wary. As I said I don't care one way or the other, but it makes it easier to give you advice when we all clearly understand what you are doing.

Welcome to the forum, by the way. :) We are definately a very helpful group, as you will see.

Brian.
