Help needed : ROWE CD Jukebox won't play without warm-up problem

Hi, everyone. My ROWE CD jukebox was made in 1995, a rare model CD-RN which looks like CD-100. Replaced the laser head a year ago and all worked well. Till recently, it starts to need warm-up time to work normal. It would pick up a CD as usual and place it properly but it won't turn the CD at all as if there is no CD found. It will repeat such procedure twice and the CD simply won't turn. After sitting idle for about 20 min ~ 1 hours, it become normal again, CD spins and music played. I even replaced the MCC and CCC ( bought from eBAY, both claimed to be tested ) , the symptom remains the same. Does anyone know what might be the problem ? Appreciate any advise.

I've never heard of an "RN" model. Any pictures of it?

What model of player is in the juke now?

You did the usual inspection of the CCC board, Mech control board, and power supply board for bad solder joints and re-soldered any bad joints found?

You checked the errors section of the software for any errors found and noted what those errors were? You have the latest version 4.3 software in the CCC?

Power supply board upgraded?

I'm sure you tried this.... But is the leanse nice and clear? The diode could be on it's way out.

Also, sounds like the servo motor might be dying....

ROWE CD-RN photos

Thanks for replying, sorry for the late response due to some trouble with my login in this forum.
4 Photos are attached which might help. It is CDM12 in the box which I replaced a new laser head
in 2008. I am not sure whether those diode/servo that Norton9478 mentioned belongs to the CDM12
or others.

Don't know how to find out the CCC SW version ? There is a photo near the power module, maybe
Ken can tell me exactly what I have. As for error code, I remember it was some RoweLink error
or comm error, I will check the error code again when I get to the jukebox in my parent's house later.

The strange thing was that I bought a set of ROWE CD-RN manuals but the MCC and CCC part # are
different from what's inside the box. Somehow, CD-Encore manual's MCC and CCC part # matches the
one in the box. So now I have both sets of manuals. Either someone swap out the MCC and CCC
and knew they will work for CD-RN, or it could be a print error. Any further clue ?

On the Central Control Computer there is a rectangular hole in the upper left corner. Look through that hole at the paper label on the software chip. The label says the version number of the software.

If your machine had a CDM12 in it then it has all the modern mech control board already in it. This means that if you have a laser player going out, all you need to do is buy a replacement CDPRO2 player (the current model) and switch out players. It's a drop in plug n play replacement. Laser players can die at any time. I've even seen new ones three days old die (covered under warranty so I got a free replacement).

If you can't afford a new player, you can contavct this company about repairing your existing player:

error code, options to fix CDM12

Ken, thanks for the quick advise. My CCC SW version is 2.5. The error code is 05-62 which is CDM communication failure, the error count is like over 50+. Is it safe to say that the root cause of failure is on CDM12 module ? If so, there are several options to fix the CDM12 :
1. replace the optical len. 2. Replace the optical len mechanism 3. Repalce the whole laser metal block assembly ( optical + motor, etc ). 4. send the metal block to an expert for an repair. The first 3 options seems available from eBay. Which one should I go for ? Thanks

If your discs are clean then the laser player is failing and is unable to read the discs.

The CDM12 is way past obsolete. Not recommended to repair it. Replace with either a rebuilt CDPRO or a brand new CDPRO2 player. Both are drop in plug n play replacements for the CDM12.

Would suggest updating the CCC software to version 3.9 (4.3 is the latest) at a bare minimum. The software chip in the mech control board should also be updated to version 5.3 (if it is not already).

Where to get the updated SW code ?

Ken, thanks for the help. I'll look for a CDPRO. Where can I get the updated SW code or
chip for CCC and MCC ? Thanks

Talk to Bruce Wentworth here:

http://www.rowejukeboxrepair.com/

Contact him and he should be able to make the chips for you. You might have to send him you CCC board though as early ones did not have a 32 pin socket for the later software chips (they are physically bigger chips than earlier software chips). The early boards only had a 28 pin socket.

CCC SW update

Ken, I appreciate all the advises. I decide to buy a new CD Pro-II which is about $315, and I can still have my CDM12 fixed as a backup. I am not quite sure if I need to upgrade the CCC SW since it worked fine before. This jukebox is only for home use and all we use are simple free play and regular coin function. I guess my real question is what's wrong with the old version that is "must fix" ?

Jukebox works with new CD-Pro2

Dear Ken, just want to let you know that I finally got the CD-Pro2 and jukebox works again.
Thank you. I have not upgrade the SW code as you suggested though.
