Help me ID this boardset please

I don't really know, but based off the small size of the board and the markings on the ROMs (HM, I think) I am going to guess 'Hang Man' by Status...

Nah, looks to me like those PAC-1/PAC-2 boardsets (although it's not labeled that), which are bootleg Pac-Man boards. HM is probably Hangly Man. Those boards pretty much look identical to mine (which I posted about one needing repair in the repair section, here's a photo I posted of the boards):

The 22/44 pin edge connector is a Pac-Man pinout, the 18/36 is Falcon (not quite the same as Crazy Kong, the joystick directions are different)

Yep, that looks EXACTLY like the boardset I have. That would also jive with the previous owner stating he had a 'pac man' game.

I have a Nintendo mini cab that has this very same boardset in it too, but written in sharpie on the board are the words 'Pop Man'

So I gather I've got one Hangly Man board, and another Hangly Man board that's been converted to Pop Man.

Bootleg boards. Blech.

The board I posted pics of is actually Popman, with the New Puck X maze (MAME has Popman, but it has the Hangly Man maze). I've got one other board just like those that was hacked to use a single EPROM, and is running Ms Pac-Man and Ms Pac Attack (switchable with an external toggle switch). They're not too bad as long as they work...I like having oddball versions of games (as you can tell from my nick.) I've even got one of the Galaxian hardware versions of Pac-Man, with the weird colors and sounds :D

Ok, so now that I've ID'd this board set, how do I test it? I brought it downstairs last night to test in my Ms Pac machine, but my Ms Pac harness is keyed and won't plug into this board. Do I just remove the key from the harness and plug it in? Or is it another pinout that I should be aware of?

Bumping my own thread - I'd like to test this boardset in my Pac cab, but this boardset is not keyed, and my Pac boards are keyed.

Can I just pull the key pin out of my harness and plug in to test this board? Or is the pinout completely different?

Any Ops or techs out there know this off the top of your head?

I suppose I could quit being lazy and go search for the pinouts for the two types of boards.....

The 22/44 edge connector should be the same pinout as Pac-Man, but it doesn't use the AC voltages, it uses +5DC and +12DC only. I tried plugging mine into a friends Ms Pac cab and it blew a fuse. It works on my Gaplus cab with a JAMMA cabinet adapter and a Pac board to JAMMA adapter though (which uses +5 and +12 DC)

I finally got around to testing these 3 bootleg boards I have.

Board 1: Hangly Man. Boots and plays. Audio issues (read below).

Board 2: Pop Man. Does not boot. (characters all over the screen) Roms are good - I tested them in the above board and the game booted fine.

Board 3: Ms Pac bootleg. Does not boot. Tested roms in working board above, will not boot on that board either. Boots to garbage on the screen.

So, I have some troubleshooting to do. First and foremost, I'd like to get audio working on the Hangly Man board. From what I see, I can tap into pins 18 and 15 on the 44 pin edge connector for speakers, or I can use the falcon edge connector and tap into pins 4 and D. I chose the 44 pin connector, since I was already connected there anyway.

Booting the board, I got SUPER LOUD sound, and it was intermittent. Turning the volume pot did nothing. Super loud, and cutting in and out. About 30 seconds more of this went on, and then the board fell silent. Now I get nothing. Not even static by running my fingers over the sound amp chip on the board. The other two boards don't boot, but at least I can get them to produce static when I run my fingers over the pins on the sound amp chip. This hangly man board does nothing now.

I tried pins 4 and D on the falcon connector, and they are silent too.

So what now? What happened? Did the 3712 amplifier just crap out?

1 year bump :D

What a difference a year makes. I fixed all 3 of these boards in an evening tonight.

All 3 bootleg boards are now working:

Board 1: Hangly Man
Board 2: Hangly Man (Popeye hack) "Pop Man"
Board 3: "Pac Gal" Ms Pac Man clone

The 3rd board was the coolest to get working. I've never seen the Pac Gal hack before. Kinda neat.

How about posting details of what it took to fix them in case someone else has the same problems with their boads?

Sure thing!

Board set 1: Pac-1 / Pac-2 bootleg pac board, running Hangly Man.

Issue: Board boots and plays, but there is no sound.

Resolution: Ran my fingers over the pins on the audio amp, an MB3712. No static at all. Suspect that the amp is dead. Replaced the amp, and the sound returned. I also replaced a 10uf 16v cap in the audio section of the board since the ESR of the cap was elevated out of spec.

Parts: 1 MB3712 amp chip, stolen from a dead Nintendo board, and 1 10uf 16v electrolytic cap.

Board set 2: Pac-1 / Pac-2 bootleg pac board, running Hangly Man, with Popeye hack - "Pop Man".

Issue: Board boots and plays. Very dirty.
Resolution: Cleaned boards in dishwasher. Reinstalled eroms. Board works perfectly.

Board set 3: Pac-1 / Pac-2 bootleg pac board, with daughtercard (Probably Ms Pac-Man bootleg).

Issue: Blank screen on boot up. No video, no audio. Board appeared dead.

Resolution: Since this is the same 2-board bootleg design, first I tried swapping in the bottom board from my working Hangly Man board set. I started to see some signs of life - jumbled characters and static. So, my bottom board must have some issues. I removed the daugtercard from the top board and plugged the CPU directly into the socket, and Hangly Man came up. So, the ribbon cable for the daughtercard was bad. I swapped in a new ribbon cable and I got Hangly Man with Ms Pac-Man mazes - normal for a pac board that has Pac character roms and a Ms Pac daughter card.

Next, I pulled a working top board from my Hangly Man set and plugged in the bottom board from this Ms Pac set. I got garbage. I grabbed my ABC diagnostic kit and plugged it into the CPU slot, and the ABC kit flashed a RAM error on ram 4R. I piggybacked 4R with a known working 2114 ram, and the game came up with garbage characters. I took a closer look at the 4 character roms on the bottom board, and found one with a broken leg. (on these pac1-pac2 boards, 2716 eproms are used, so instead of 2 2532 character roms, there are 4. The data for each eprom is split over 2 2716 eproms.) I re-seated the eprom, making sure the broken leg was making contact with the socket by metering it my multi-meter. I fired the game, and it came up: "Pac Gal" - a Ms Pac-Man clone. Neat!

In the future, I will dump the contents of the character roms and reburn a new 2716 to replace the one with the busted leg.

Parts: Ribbon cable, 2114 ram, and a new 2716 eprom.
