Sure thing!
Board set 1: Pac-1 / Pac-2 bootleg pac board, running Hangly Man.
Issue: Board boots and plays, but there is no sound.
Resolution: Ran my fingers over the pins on the audio amp, an MB3712. No static at all. Suspect that the amp is dead. Replaced the amp, and the sound returned. I also replaced a 10uf 16v cap in the audio section of the board since the ESR of the cap was elevated out of spec.
Parts: 1 MB3712 amp chip, stolen from a dead Nintendo board, and 1 10uf 16v electrolytic cap.
Board set 2: Pac-1 / Pac-2 bootleg pac board, running Hangly Man, with Popeye hack - "Pop Man".
Issue: Board boots and plays. Very dirty.
Resolution: Cleaned boards in dishwasher. Reinstalled eroms. Board works perfectly.
Board set 3: Pac-1 / Pac-2 bootleg pac board, with daughtercard (Probably Ms Pac-Man bootleg).
Issue: Blank screen on boot up. No video, no audio. Board appeared dead.
Resolution: Since this is the same 2-board bootleg design, first I tried swapping in the bottom board from my working Hangly Man board set. I started to see some signs of life - jumbled characters and static. So, my bottom board must have some issues. I removed the daugtercard from the top board and plugged the CPU directly into the socket, and Hangly Man came up. So, the ribbon cable for the daughtercard was bad. I swapped in a new ribbon cable and I got Hangly Man with Ms Pac-Man mazes - normal for a pac board that has Pac character roms and a Ms Pac daughter card.
Next, I pulled a working top board from my Hangly Man set and plugged in the bottom board from this Ms Pac set. I got garbage. I grabbed my ABC diagnostic kit and plugged it into the CPU slot, and the ABC kit flashed a RAM error on ram 4R. I piggybacked 4R with a known working 2114 ram, and the game came up with garbage characters. I took a closer look at the 4 character roms on the bottom board, and found one with a broken leg. (on these pac1-pac2 boards, 2716 eproms are used, so instead of 2 2532 character roms, there are 4. The data for each eprom is split over 2 2716 eproms.) I re-seated the eprom, making sure the broken leg was making contact with the socket by metering it my multi-meter. I fired the game, and it came up: "Pac Gal" - a Ms Pac-Man clone. Neat!
In the future, I will dump the contents of the character roms and reburn a new 2716 to replace the one with the busted leg.
Parts: Ribbon cable, 2114 ram, and a new 2716 eprom.
