A buddy of mine picked up 2 Pole Positions. One Pole Position clicks on and off, and one of the orange wires on the power brick smoke out and burn. The other one just turns on and eventually the fan speeds up and becomes loud. Nothing is displayed on the screens. I am going to test the boards in my machine today to see if they work.

So on the first Pole Position, I am assuming the transformer is toast. If the boards turn out good, I guess what I would like to try would be to run a switcher in the one that doesnt smoke out. Would that work? What should I do to make at least 1, if not both Pole Positions work reliably?

The best you can do with the power is to run directly to the board from the power supply, either with spade lugs or soldering directly to the power busses or test points, a switching supply will work fine,I haven't ever had a board that needed the extra strapping of the +5 & gnd to all the test terminals, not required but won't hurt anything or cause a problem, just looks ugly and gets in the way if you need to service the boards.

Replace the pins in the edge connectors, at least the ground and power pins. 30yr old pins are no longer doing their job. Jumper the power and ground from the AR2 to the test points on the boards with wire and spade connectors. Rebuild the AR2.
