Help me choose which budget DMD pinball! My first DMD :)

I have a tight budget but i have enough to buy a DMD pinball now. I have read and looked on youtube on these machines, and these are within my budget and look nice. I am not able to play these anywhere so it's a risk to buy one. Where possible i tried them digital, but that is just not the same. So i am using the top 300 as a guide.

I am looking for a pinball that is hard and has a lot of depth. But i also like Attack from Mars, i know what is not really hard but i love it. Cannot afford it, else it would be that machine. So a game simular like that one is also great.

Could someone help me choose or add a pin in the same budget. These are the pinballmachines i think are my best choice:

* Judge Dredd
* Fishtales
* white water
* The shadow
* Dr. Who

Can someone advise me please?

What is your budget? The pins you have listed have quite a bit of range as far as price goes.

These machines cost about 1000 - 1200 in europe where i live. All the same price. Some are 100 more.. some 100 less. I know the US has very different pricing... so you cannot compare them. But a Attack from mars cost about 3500 dollar here..... so that is really a lot more. Where a pin2000 revenge from mars is a lot cheaper and would be in the same price as the machines i can afford. But i do not like the small playfield and it's much too easy.

Fish tales.... Not hard/not easy, but addictive fun.
Shadow: Fast, furious, in your face, kick you in the ass and make you come back for more
WH20: Haven't spent much time on it, but a good game
DW: haven't played
JD: Can't stand it!

You could add Demolition Man to your list of considerations. I'm not saying it is the best in your list, but it would be on the lower end of your price point and it is a pretty cool pin with tons of flow.

So where you are a Dr. Who and White Water are basically the same price? Hole crap I need to mone!

From your list, this is the order I would go in:

* white water
* Fishtales
* The shadow
* Dr. Who
* Judge Dredd

And for the record, Pinball 2000 playfields are not that much smaller, they just seem that way :) In fact, that are larger than many System 11 machines. That said, they are a bit smaller than say, AFM, but not by much. Optical illusion :)

Good luck with your pin purchase!

Chris

Of the games you listed Whitewater is the most fun for me. Dr Who is a great game but fairly complex. I am a big Who fan tho so I enjoy all the little things in it.

Oh and once you get one, you will get two...then three...then..well you get the point

whitewater will be the most expensive on your list. but it is very collectible. if you find one make sure it comes with the topper. i have heard judge dredd is fun to play. the shadow is a fun game but it is based on a movie (some people dont like that). i have heard dr who is a fun one to play with many followers who enjoy it (i never played one) but whatever you do.......dont get a fishtales. very hard game to resell and i dont know anyone who WANTS a fishtales.....theres been a few of those near me for sale and it seems like they never move

Demolition Man was my first DMD pin and it's a great bang for buck wide body with tons of flow and multi-ball modes. The only problem with DM usually is top handle wear which can look like an eye sore cause of the worn down chrome finish but doesn't take away from the game play.

Another really underrated and undervalued game is Congo which is a lot of fun and has some pretty unique features such as the under play field gorilla, volcano eruption multi-ball start, jump ramp and midnight madness! Well that is more of a hidden feature and freaked the hell out of me at first when I saw my machine shut off completely. Plus it was late at night and my daughter was sleeping so I had to step back and watch the balls drain. There are a few other machines which has this midnight madness a feature such as Johnny Mnemonic, Dirty Harry and Twilight Zone.

Speaking of Johnny Mnemonic that is another great game in the same price range as DM, Congo and Judge Dredd.

Be very careful with White Water that is in less than perfect condition because replacing ramps for this game can easily run you over $600! The boulders also take a good beating too and cost around $140 for the entire set. The two green drop targets are also another problematic area too cause they take a beating in this game.

The Shadow is a neat game and look out for Sanctum wear which should be an easy touch up job since it is a solid color.

And while they were on the subject the other day on RGP:

Bram Stoker's Dracula

Of the pins on your list, I like Whitewater the best, though.

Shadow or BSD

I had a BSD for over 14 years and put over 3500 plays on it. I didn't have it at my house all the time because I moved, but it did come back to me and played it a lot more. It was just time to move on to newer pins. Great fast pin that will kick your ass. No wizard mode. Object is to stack all 3 multiballs at the same time for Thiiiirrrrrttttyyyyyy Mmmiiiilllllllllllliiiiiiiioooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnn Points. LOL.

Thank you all! I have put Bram Stoker's Dracula on the list as well.
It is funny to hear a lot people love or just hate JD. The fact it's widebody i find attractive.... but i never played the real thing.

I will be patient to see what will come on my path!

The most important thing is to go and try out the real machine or play a Visual PinMAME equivalent. I've got both and I know there is no comparison when it comes to real physics but at least in PinMAME you get an idea of the type of shots, video modes offered by the game and you get a sense of the game's flow. I was fortunate enough to know a few local collectors which all have 15+ pins in their collection so I go to log quiet a few games on all the machines I own. Also remember just because a game is on the Top 10-20 ipdb list or a favorite by many people it might not be your cup of tea. If you need help on setting up PinMAME send me a PM and I'll guide you through it.

That is the key in this hobby is to wait for the right pin at the right price to come along. Heck it took me almost 11 months before I finally pulled the trigger on my first pin. I think I probably email my friend maybe 10x a day every time I came across a pin on craigslist/kijiji to see what his thoughts are. If you buy the wrong title you might get stuck trying to sell it for months or pay too much and take a huge loss on the machine.

Here are a few other titles you might want to consider:

Jurassic Park (aka poor man's Adam's Family) $1600-1800
The Getaway High Speed II $1600-1800
Red & Ted's Roadshow $1900-2200
World Cup Soccer '94 $1500-1600
Indianapolis 500 $? Never seen one for sale but lots of fun to play on my PinMAME cab
Ripley's Believe It Or Not $2000-2300
Batman Forever $2000

The value I listed here are what I've seen them sell for up here in Toronto, Canada. In the US you guys are more fortunate to pay less.

thank you for your input. I'm not sure how much those pins cost here in the netherlands. I do have 2 real pinballmachines, and i own a VPmame cabinet. So i know the difference, and that is the reason i really would love a modern dmd pin in my collection. I own a bally black jack and a williams comet.

But i have time .... so i will try to play those pins if can find them. I know a collector that might have them...

Something great happened... i got some extra cash by selling a piano and some speakers.... and i am in the race in buying a Twilight Zone. That is kinda my "grail" .... and i have played some of the pins we were talking about. White Water is a great pin, and i want to have that one in my collection when i have enough money to expand. BSD is also great... the rest are not really my cup of tea it seems. Or maybe i need to play them more... you know how it is. One day to to try most of them a continious pinball session might give some wrong impression about some pinballmachines.

I'll keep you posted when i am buying one. I want to buy it in a almost mint state, i have seen one for sale that looks awesome with a newly clearcoated playfield. But they are asking 2000 euro ... might be a little steep but who knows.

I would say the Shadow is the best on that list, but it's also the hardest. White Water is good, but I don't think people realize just how much those are going for right now. Same with Shadow... if you found someone willing to sell nice versions of either below 2000, they are stupid. Not sure what your budget is.

I personally loved my first pin choice, which was a Who Dunnit. Awesome game. Way too under rated, I think.

Also, for the TZ, just know tht they can be had at a somewhat cheap price, but they WILL be beat to shit (at that price).

RFM's playfield is not any smaller than a regular machine. It just is inside a smaller cabinet. And if it's too easy, you don't have it set up right. It's a much better machine that every other one you've mentioned, has much deeper ruleset and will probably hold its value longer or increase in value more than any of the others.
