Help!? Jawhn's Vs. Super Mario Bros. cab control panel wiring problem

Ok, the Nintendo Vs. Super Mario Bros. game I bought about a week ago... It's the most-finished project I ever purchased so far... Screen is a little fuzzy and discolored, but highly playable. It boots. Sound works. Life is mostly good.

The wiring on the control panel is wack, however. The only buttons that work at the moment are: 1up start, 2up start, and Player 1 Jump. And the P1 jump used to be the Player 2 secondary button, so I just moved the leads. And also, if I move the joystick, nothing. In any direction. But. If I jump, I can jump left or right. And when I've picked up a mushroom, and Mario gets 2x big, when he jumps, he is jumping while squatting. I don't know if this helps figure out what's wack or not...

This is my first Vs. system BTW.

There are two cable bundles / plugs coming to the CP. Is it safe to assume that one is for P1, and the other P2? Or no? One set has a Black cable for the common ground, and the other cable set uses a funky off-green/dark teal for ground.

Orynk Zinko (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) sent me a link for a Vs. schematic, but there is no mention of wire colors... :(

What is the best way to ask for advice on here?
  • Please take a good, high-res pic of the wiring of your Vs. SMB control panel?
  • Please write down what color wire(s) go to your P1 jump, up, etc?
I originally thought I'd just wander outside and just play around, switching wires, but now after attempting to do that, I see that that is a strategic nightmare... I would love to be able to start with someone aiming me in the right direction with: This color wire goes here, (Obviously all switches have a common ground) this color goes here... Etc.

Thanks in advance for help! :D

Sir, THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!! :D

Well, shoot. I wired it like yours, and P2 plays perfectly, but P1 is still doing the same crap... No joystick movement unless jump is pressed. And when he's 'mushroomed' he is always squatting, unless L or R is pressed.

I wonder if maybe the P1 "down" switch is somehow constantly on? Hmmm.

Nope. Still does same thing. :(

Possible short somewhere in harness?

I would take the ground from P2 and try it.
Could be multiple issues.
Verify your wiring from the pics.
Ensure that you are checking the orientation from where the pics where taken.
Pull the P1 joy out and use an alternative for troubleshooting.

My money is on the ground to P1 joy though...

You'll need a Mutlimeter set to the continuity setting.

1) Disconnect the Control Panel from the Harness
2) Use the Black Lead on the Green Wire in the harness
3) Use the Red Lead on the following wires:

Brown (Right)
Red (Left)
Orange (Up)
Yellow (Down)

If you hear a tone for any of those, then you either have a switch wired wrong, a bad switch or a short.

Repeat the test with the Black Lead on the Black wire. You should get the same results.

If everything is working as expected, you can reconnect the control panel and move on to the harness and edge connector. The 36 pin connector is the one used for the control panel.

1) Black Lead to Either 1 or A.
2) Test against the following pins:
2,3,4,5,12,13,14,15
B,C,D,E,N,P,R,S

If you're not getting any tones, it could be an issue with the board itself.

Another thought, is you could bypass the FCC PCB and make sure that's not the issue. You should be able to hook the harness directly up to the PCB.

Ok, thanks a bunch for the specific directions, Krajkerjac and Brien. (Gotta love local help!) I finally got around to looking at it tonight...

Unplugged, everything seemed to be wired correctly. I noticed that the joystick switches were not on the same ground circuit as the button switches. However, when plugged in, all shared grounds. (Based on continuity)

So I guess my next step is to take a look at the edge connectors... And FCC thing. The grounds for P1 joy seemed to work - all four joy switches shared a common ground.

A good point was made about the FCC filter. Try it without it.

You stated continuity with the ground on the joy 1. Did you try jumpering the ground from P2 to see if working? Reason I ask, you stated that it seemed like P1 was always pulling down (as in a stuck switch on Joy 1) when connected....

Well, I checked for continuity between both poles of the "down" switch on joy1 (which of course is at the top of the joystick base) and it was not a closed circuit with joystick not moving...?

Did that with it being plugged into the game, and then disconnected, just the control panel. So there is no switch being closed issue issue. (Damnit! That would be too easy, huh?)

I have not tried jumpering P2 joy ground to P1 yet. Soon. And I've given up for the night, tonight. And I will remove the FCC board and see if that's the problem. (If I get lost on where that is, I'll post up)
