I have a Ms Pac-Man cabaret. I believe the monitor could use a cap job. I have the image dialed down to where it looks pretty decent, but it is severely lacking next to my Pac-Man cabaret.

My questions:
1. Please help me identify the model. I cannot find ANY identification.
2. Turning up the brightness makes the picture less sharp. It also can cause some pink banding issues. I assume this is a cap issue. Will this also take care of the sharpness of the picture?

I have attached an image. Thanks!

Wells Gardner 4900.

edit: whoops, yes the 4800 is the model for the 13". I think it's the same chassis as the 4900 but will have some different caps.

Looks like a good price for quality caps. When I got the machine, the monitor had the pink lines, etc.. I adjusted them all out. I am attaching two images. One is of my Pac-Man (Hangly-Man) monitor (My end goal for Ms Pac). The other is my Ms Pac-Man, after adjusting the color banding out and trying to tweak the focus.

You can see that Ms Pac-Man is visibly blurrier than the Pac-Man. Will the cap kit help this issue, or is that more the tube or flyback causing poor focus?

Thanks,
Darryl

Cap kit may help with that, but you could also have a weak/failing flyback or an old tube, or all of the above. In my experience the inability to get focus is more often a flyback than caps, but not always.

One of the reasons people reflexively say to do a cap kit is that it's fairly easy/inexpensive as far as monitor repairs go, it does clear up a number of common issues, and the issues it doesn't fix it prevents in the future. It's always good to know your caps are good before you go digging around for some other problem. But there are a number of times when I recap a monitor and it looks exactly the same when I'm done as before I started.

that first picture looks like you may have a slight convergence issue also. caps NEVER hurt.

cap kit and re-flow first.

get the tube checked if you can.

if you need parts i have them.

if you need it fixed, your welcome to send it in.

Peace
Buffett
