One of my many short comings in this hobby is component identification. About 50% of the time, I have a tough time determining what exact replacement component to buy.

Here's the one I'm working on now:

I have an Immersion PCB from a Need For Speed. I need to preplace the transistors. I easily sourced both transistors, but there are variants of each, and I have no clue which "version" of the transistor to purchase. It's quite possible that any of the variants will work, but I'm out of my element in this regard.

I used to do a lot of PIC programming, and I know that the "extra" numbers/letters after the initial part number are tolerance ratings, but as far as most other components, I'm left scratching my head.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to get these on order asap.

Thanks,
John

2 easy to find parts that can be oh so easily ordered on ebay. god i love ebay. they have EVERYTHING at such a convenience! :)

part #1: IRFZ44N (mosfet n-channel 49a 55v) power transistor { http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...RC1.A0.H0.Xirfz44n.TRS0&_nkw=irfz44n&_sacat=0 } 210 results (39 in USA)

part #2: IRF4905 (mosfet 74a 55v) field effect transistor { http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...RC1.A0.H0.Xirf4905.TRS0&_nkw=irf4905&_sacat=0 } 182 results (25 in USA)

After price comparing, I ended up getting 10 x IRFZ44NPBF and 5 x IRF4905 for a grand total of $13.00 shipped off ebay.

The IRFZ44NPBF showed up on Monday. The IRF4905 will be here Tomorrow. Normally I don't order this kind of stuff off ebay, but going foward, ebay will be on my price check list for these types of components. I got these shipped for what the shipping alone would have cost me from any of the big name suppliers.

Just be careful buying transistors from China on eBay. Lots of fakes out there now. They seem to be worse than chip fakes.

I had some problems with TIP36c failing repeatedly. I finally smashed one open and it had a puny tiny dye in it compared to a legit part. Doing a bit more research I concluded the markings on the case where fake too (STM stopped making TIP36c in the case I received). Now i am seeing on ebay and ali the same type of fakes I got. Some kind of dodgy china clone... they usually ok, but rolling the dice it is going to be a sub rated part.

I was wondering about that myself. I guess I'll find out. For what I paid, it will be a cheap lesson learned if they are junk. The pcb I'm trying to fix is an extra, so not a time sensitive fix. If they work, I plan on giving it a stress test in the arcade.

Somehow I totally missed this trans on the pcb. Can't seem to source it.

Any help is appreciated.

yup, TIP-102's are super common, even at quantity 10 via digikey @ 54 cents each + S&H,
you can save more $ purchasing 10 of the same thing on eBay for 35 cents each or OBO
(and it's the 100% same brand being sold at digikey - STMicroelectro)...:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/10PCS-TIP102-New-STMicroelectronics-USA-Seller-/201855687192

it's a USA seller too, no extraordinary waiting around for items to ship from china in 1-2 months!

actually, more ironically, they are in your (sirsalt) home state of Ohio! in Columbus, Ohio. so S&H should be within 1-2 days! :)

And even more ironically, he's a KLOVer (actually, I don't know if that's really ironic, or the non-ironic irony that Alanis Morissette sang about). :p

I swear I googled that and it came up garbage...

Thanks for the help.

This looks similar to the 5V transistor I replaced in a Turbo Graphics years ago. Wonder if I still have some...

Ordered from ebay anyway. Can't hurt to have some laying around. Hoping this trans is the problem. Replaced the other 4 and still no go. I'm gonna pull and test it tonight. Would have done that to begin with if I saw it on the board to begin with.
