Can anybody identify an old game I remember playing (and loving) as a kid back in 1972? It was a Word War I shooter. You had a machine gun and you aimed at a couple of planes which I think were actual models on the end of mechanical arms but might simply have been projected onto a back screen. They flew over a trench-type landscape and when you hit one the back screen showed a red explosion.

All of these details might be wrong in a myriad of ways, because it was a long time ago.

Cheers, Dominic

Thanks. Could have been Chicago Coin's Defender Machine Gun or Taito's Caliber, but Taito's Border Line sounds the most likely: "shoot down circling bi-planes which crash into a landscape". The date fits too. I would have to see shots of the actual planes and landscape to be sure, but I reckon that's probably it.

No, actually I think Modessitt nailed it with Border Line. I don't remember tanks and the playfield in Dogfight doesn't fit my memory either. The main thing stuck in my brain was that there were biplanes (two?) that circled round the playfield and I'm pretty sure they were real models on the ends of mechanical arms. And I'm pretty sure it had a machine gun, not a rifle. Funny thing is I don't recall the playfield being enclosed in a cabinet (I see it in my mind more as an open-air diorama-style thing), but it must have been in a cab.
