I played a game that I desperately want to find. It was a sit down (linked) game where 2 people engage in a robot vehicle dogfight. You are robots and you go around an obstacle course and destroy each others robot or robot vehicle. If I remember correctly, the controls may have even been similar to a skid loader (2 bars...push left forward and right backwards to turn sharply right...etc.)

Can someone help me?

I played it a couple years ago so it may be an older game.

home versions are available on Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and there's a port on Xbox 360 Live.

Typically they sell for $350-500 for a full twin unit.
The Naomi driven VO:OT version can be put into the standard VO twin units.

It's a great great deep game. The problem is that they are complete beast to have and move around. The mass appeal for this game just isn't there so often times they don't sell well or people get bored of it cause they can't find someone else that really wants to play it. Then the price goes down.

Great game if you have friends that will play with you and you can afford the space.

Virtual On is it, then? (also note correct spelling here - it's frequently mistakenly called "Virtua On" likely because Sega also made titles with Virtua in them, such as Virtua Fighter, Virtua Striker, etc....

For similar gameplay, check out Namco's Cybersled.
