The Defender Machine I just got only starts up in Book-Keeping Mode (0000 coins left is the message I believe) from my web searches I understand this to be battery failure, but the thing is I could have sworn it didn't do that when I first looked at it and tested it...The AA batteries were corroded at the time, so the batteries couldn't have been working, I have ran all the RAM/ROM diagnostics and it says everything is OK, I just have to advance through the menu each time to play...My question is I have cleaned up the corrision & acid from the board- no significant/apparent damage, tried new AA's and still same problem, I assume that the battery holder is shot and upgrading to a lithium battery/conversion kit will solve this? Does that sound right?

Thanks for any help...

You should do voltage checks on the battery holder with the batteries installed to make sure you have your 4.8v all the way thru. Sometimes corrosion on the tabs makes a poor contact on the batteries and you may only get .7 from a battery instead of 1.6. If your voltage thru is too low, then you'll keep getting this on bootup.

Also, there are some diodes right there next to the battery back. Make sure they are good and don't have corrosion on them...

Battery

I had the same problem with resets in my Williams game, and put in the lithium battery fix. Still reset. Put in a rebuilt power supply and "upgraded" all the IDC connectors on the wiring harnesses to new molex ones. That did the trick. The resets are usually power related, I would upgrade the wiring and power on any williams game.

Stay away from switching power supplies -- they drift and can cause all sorts of problems.
