Help converting original Galaga cabinet to Multi Jamma

Hi Everyone. I have an original stand up Galaga cabinet that I would like to convert to a multi jamma game. I know that several of the games on the 60-in-1 boards will require more buttons than what comes standard with the Galaga cabinet. Has anyone done this conversion before? If so, would you mind posting a link to everything I would need to do this? I'm a newbie with this kind of stuff, but assume I would need maybe a new control panel, buttons, and possibly some kind of converter to swap out the Galaga board with the multi jamma right? Just want to be sure I am getting the right things for the conversion. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help!!

I would both search these forums for your answers and also use an internet search engine .

The members here are not fond of making multi games out of classic machines. However, if you were to use another control panel and an adapter (keeping the original wiring and power supply in place) then the machine can be returned to a dedicated Galaga without much trouble and no permanent damage.

I have done this for my Pac-Man. I actually have a Lizard-Lick amusements (I think out of business now) adapter and the awesome Arcade SD board. It looks completely original and the original working Pac-man board is still in there. No extra buttons or any other modifications. This adapter allows the player one and player two buttons to function as game controls once in the game!

Well the reason I am thinking of converting is because the sound is not working, except when the ship explodes. I did searching and it sounds like its an issue with the board. So I felt instead of replacing that with a galaga I'd get one with a lot more games for my kids to enjoy. Never realized the multi games were frowned upon.

What you did sounds nice. Do you have a link to that adapter (i know you said the place you got yours was out of business, but have you found it anywhere else?)

Thanks for the response!!

There's a limited number of these original games so converting them into something else is frowned on, yes.

If you were starting with a generic cabinet then no one would care.

If you HAVE to do this, it's possible to do in a way that doesn't damage or gut the original and you should go that route.

Yeah, the whole "Vintage Game Preservation Society" on the top left of the screen kinda explains it. You have a dedicated galaga, they are sought after.. Find someone local to help you fix your sound issue, its not a difficult fix actually.

Or find someone to trade you a multi game for your dedicated game.. I was once new too, but after a bit of time and research fixing these games will be a piece of cake :)

I did something similar with a non working Galaxian, missing the PCB. Cosmetically I kept it as a Galaxian, and actually did a lot of cosmetic restoration. I left all wiring and power supplies intact in the cabinet. I added jamma wiring and a switching power supply. I also put in a new control panel with additional buttons and graphics that are adapted from that on the original Galaxian control panel. (I kept the original Galaxian control panel for future use.) What I am left if is a cabinet that could be totally return to a Galaxian only in a few minutes.

I agree with the philosophy of keeping cabinets original. However, those of us who live in areas where basements do not exist do not have the luxury of having multiple cabinets. I think a reservable approach like I took is a nice compromise.

I actually found a guy who shops out galaga boards on ebay for not that much money. He'd probably have that running in no time flat.

Also personally I hate 60-1 boards for a few reasons: 1. many idiots destroy real working games to make these machines and #2. it's full of unlicensed bootlegs

The Cabinet is in really nice shape, I have no plans to damage it in ANY way (or change stickers or the marquee or anything like that) I was hoping I could have the exterior the EXACT same and just swap out the board and the control panel. I am not doing this to flip anything. I have a 3 and 5 year old that I hope will soon get into the arcade games the way I did. Right now they are much more pinball driven. Just like Daddy :)

The problem is that galaga's joystick is left/right only. You can't play MOST of games on the 60-in-one with that joystick scheme. Also many of the games require two buttons.

You're better off sourcing a new control panel if you're going that route. But what might be better is to:

1. Sell the machine here or on CL to a collector/someone who wants a Galaga.

2. Use the moola, find a Capcom cabinet that already has Jamma wiring in it and put a 60-in-1 in that.

Its your cab, do what you want, but a couple of suggestions..

Get a panel from Arcadeshop, a jamma harness and leave all the original galaga parts intact. You'll have a nice multicade, and preserve the Galaga as well. No one should have an issue if you dont destroy or permanantly remove parts.

If your savy you can use the galaga power supply, but using a switcher is easy too.

Yeah, TB's prices on some stuff are off but at least their art etc. is properly priced.
Don't use a Jamma harness, use a converter like I linked and an ArcadeShop CP. Therefore, after the conversion, the cabinet will be very easily de-convertible.

I recommend getting a custom CPO made instead of using AS's as it's really ass.

Twobits has got a long history going way back, Jr Pac, and they haven't always been the most highly acclaimed seller out there.

Their art sucks, btw. Don't waste your money on it.
